So I had been told by many, including the owner’s manual, that my 2016 SR5 4X4 Tacoma is not flat-towable since there is no "neutral" selection in the transfer case. Today, on a whim I reached out to Superior Driveline (REMCO) over in Des Moines Iowa about one of their driveline disconnect kits.
The owner assured me that they had installed this kit on several 4x4 Tacoma’s with no issues over 1000's of miles flat towing. They actually have a video on You-Tube documenting the install and he stated that many folks had approached him at RV shows stating their disappointment in having to give up their Tacoma for a Jeep product for a flat tow 4x4, because they didn’t know about this product.
I asked about durability in the dirty, dusty, muddy, off-road environment and he assured me that for what I want to do off-road, this drive line disconnect would be sufficient. My preference being forest service and BLM boondock camping.
I still don’t know enough about how the front axle locking mechanism works though. Is it freewheeling until I select 4hi or low and the diff then locks? Any input you experts have on how the front axle works would be greatly appreciated.
Before I drop coin on this conversion, I want to feel pretty confident that I’m not going to toast my driveline.
    TIA.

The front axles are locked to the wheel hub all the time.
Which means the spider gears are always turning. But you don’t need to worry about it.
Basically, you don’t need to worry about the front end (unless you’re in 4WD. In which case, you shouldn’t be towing it anyways)
