Yes, this. Getting intimate with one’s vehicle is always a good thing for when things go bad. The reason I wish to do all my own work.

I fear he is going to have endless opportunities to get to know his truck. Mechanical, electrical, interior, body, the list just goes on.

Something that occured to me is how much debris is stuck in the rocker panels?

 

I once drove a vehicle into a mud pit during a bad rainstorm - years later I found dried out mud that I did not get out upon the initial cleaning. In my case only harm was to my pride. 1975 Celica I pulled out of the mud with a backhoe and ran it on home. Less electronics in those days.

 

That cross bar (I’ve always called it a crash bar, dunno if that accurate for Toyotas) is almost never finished in any car, just left raw steel. They all rust a bit eventually, looks fine

 

Shit in the rockers, and that dash bar are on the very short list of things the OP actually doesn't need to worry about...

Dude has a tough row to hoe with this deal. It's not like it's a job that will one day be done..

 

Hang in there OP. Most people are more screwed on car purchases these days than you are. Patience and persistence will get you there.

 

I had a flooded 4Runner. Never ending repair job. Too many electronics and too much wiring.
