HMMM.. If they do total it(hope not) take the money buy it back, payoff some of the loan and used the rest to build it back up that way you want it. I have a buddy who did this up here and now he is better off. Sure his truck looks like frankenstein cause he rolled it down a cliff but hes happy. Either way good luck.

    back to bone stock.
i've taken off my pants, socks/shoes and used a big stick to wade thru uncharted water. my ass getting cold and dirty, and my friends making fun of "shrinkage"..is small price to pay to prevent disaster.

i've done it twice. one time was FREEZING!! my friends quit making fun of me, when i told them..they get the next water crossing. both times, the water was shallow and we made it thru.

i learned this when a friend rode a honda 200x into a puddle and destroyed his motor. he flat out u-boated it. hydrolock city.

op have you tried draining the oil? there could be enough water in the crankcase to prevent the pistons from going down... stick hydro locked...

check the oil level if you dont feel like draining it...

the 12v dropping to 2v is not right. quick test is to turn the lights on and see if they are bright... the battery could be contaminated with water if it isnt a sealed battery

this also makes me think there is a battery issue. there isnt enough juice to run everything so the radio turns off etc. turn your lights on and see if they are bright if not you may need a jump start to turn it over

once again verify plugs are out and oil level is normal

Oil level appeared normal and their was no noticeable "milkiness". The battery tested fine under load but everything was no go. The lights turned off completely (not dimmed) when trying to start. Guessing a short somewhere?

In any case it will be going to the shop now. If the truck was at home I would try a bit longer but since it is 320 miles away, I figure it is best to let insurance take care of it since they are willing to.

For the record, the water was under three feet deep (just checked). Just a VERY stupid intake placement. While I would like to blame the last owner...I shoulda been more cautious with it and not assumed he did all mods as smart as others. C'est la vie...

Could be a bad ground. Doesn't sound like a short. Sounds like a loose connection

So...if this gets totaled would I be looking at Blue Book for what they would pay me? KBB is about $23,600. This obviously does not count all the TC long travel stuff or the King Shocks or or or but...Any guesses on what they would charge to buy it back if they do?

    Hope you have reciepts.
I got bluebook + 4 grand for my truck...and that was with over ~18k in reciepts from me and the previous owner. Buyback on mine was a smidge over 3 grand. In the end, I came out smelling like roses.

EDIT: Buyback on yours will likely be higher as yours is newer, and a second gen.

Unfortunately, the PO did the suspension work and he did not keep any of the receipts. I have receipts for everything else that I have done but we will have to see I suppose. Maybe it won't even be necessary...just trying to plan accordingly.

Then give them website links to the products showing price and appx date purchased. The adjusters will depreciate the item the older it is. I had to do this for a few items as well.

Just a thought..but do they up the buy back value with the aftermarket parts or is it just a salvage title that you pay for? I just did a quick look up online nothing too in depth. But I guess you'll cross that road "if" you get there.

They didn't on mine. They added 4k for extras and the buyback was less than that. Just paying for the salvage title. No brainer for me.

Nothing yet :( first the place aaa was going to take it had not been notified ahead of time and then once they did get it they had to forward it along to another shop that does mechanical work. Not sure why they sent it to a body shop at first anyway but hey.

Just got a call from the body shop who is handling the repair through one of their "sister shops" that does their mechanical work (weird, I know).

The truck does need a new engine and they are going to be replacing it. I am bummed it is going to be a used engine but it will be dropping about 50K miles off the truck! The new engine has 23K miles.

I believe the total is going to be $6700 including labor but insurance will cover all but $1000 of it (my deductible). Also, this will have a 15,000 mile warranty since it is a AAA approved mechanic.

I am a little concerned that electrical issues will pop up but hopefully they will be able to track it all down. If not, I should be able to claim it under the warranty.

At least it did not stall in the water or anything, so all the bearings and seals SHOULD be alright. Knock on wood

So what you're saying is, your truck found a fountain of youth?

When you get your truck back, I'd flush all the gear/transmission/xfer case fluids anyway. I did.

    Yes, yes he did! Haha.

And that is a great call. The shop mentioned they would be doing a lot of the stuff but I am going to likely go through everything once I get it back. I don't want to risk ANYTHING.

Sucks that it happened, but hey, it's what we pay AAA for. Glad they are taking care of you.

In the grand scheme of things, you are way better off with a used motor. Toyota does not sell a complete long block. They sell only a short block, naked heads, and all the gaskets/internals separate. Which means some monkey making 15% over minium wage would be putting it together. With a used motor, you get a FACTORY motor built to factory specs.

All my electrical nuances disappeared after the truck dried out a few days later. Only things of concern really I can think of would be the TPS and MAF sensors. I cleaned the hell out of mine when my engine was out and had no issues. I had one problem with a stuck VSV (water got in the VSV line and sealed it shut when it dried). A few taps with a screwdriver and powering it on/off manually on the bench fixed it.

Oh yeah, even a month later there was water in the cats. It took probably 15 minutes of the engine running before they stopped steaming/smoking.

Let me know when you get you're truck back. We'll go break it in LT style
