Yep... the conclusion is....it depends on who you talk to.. lol..

After reading a bunch of the BAD craftsman reviews, I think I will take my chance with a big-box (costco or sams 3.5 ton).. I have seen aluminum at sam's previously, so if they have it, then I'll go with that.. Costco currently has a steel 3.5 that weights close to 100lbs.. I would like the ability to put it in the truck if I need to, and would be even better if I could leave in there..

If I end up with the steel, then it is definitely staying in the garage..

Will go out after work and see what I can find..

    Raycie,

I just got mine. I opted for the , since it was on sale for $60 (extra $20 off vs yesterday). It had several good reviews versus other aluminum jacks at here or Sears. The good thing about this low profile jack is the saddle is goes down to 3", which gets under my BMW too. It'll be the jack of all trades (if it holds up).

The question should not be aluminum or steel, The question is what brand to get. there are only three companies that manufacture jacks now, 2 are foreign. They make the majority of the jacks out there. just labeled with different names

Jet, Craftsman, Big Red all foreign junk. No replacement parts available.

The only US brand is OTC. and replacement parts are available.

If I was doing a whole bunch of work all the time, then I would spend hundreds on one.. had a small one years ago, but that didn't last...
all these mainland companies (i.e. harbor freight) are out as "freight" is expensive especially to an island.

I mainly want/need one now so I can re-do my rear leaf pack, get the block out, and put in a aal..

Anyone have experience with the sam's club or costco jacks? Sam's is Michelin.. Costco is Arcan..

That's good info. It's next to impossible to find anything made in the US anymore and so much of the off shore stuff is garbage. I'd rather pay a little more for something that's works and is safe. Thanks.

raycie I hear what you saying but safety is #1 issue. you would be sorry if the cheap jack let go and the truck fell and hit you or crushed your legs.
Here is a OTC jack from Summit Racing.

    for $175.95

Hey Yoytoda here's some info. on Kobalt tools.
Kobalt tools are made in several countries, but mainly in the United States and China. Some parts are made in China, as well as Mexico, and then assembled in the United States. Kobalt hand tools are made exclusively in the United States by the Danaher Corporation based out of Washington, D.C., while nearly all Kobalt power tools are made in China.

Oh definitely.. honestly in most instances, I would take my truck in to a shop if it meant me needing to jack it up, lay under it, and have 2 jack stands as my protection.. .. If i had to jack up my truck, and take off the wheels to change oil, I would bring it to a shop as well..

On Oahu, we have big box (Costco /Sam's/Home Depot/Lowes) as well as smaller boxes (Kragen/Checkers), Sears, and some smaller auto parts dealers.. in 9 out of 10 places you will find a chinese crap..

I guess I am just trying to find the better of the crap out there..
