I think Maverick hit it, Grass Carp.

 

That sucker fish looking deal was dark brown, closely resembles the pleco. They looked just like the sucker fish you would have in an aquarium only much bigger. It definitely was not a carp. The other drum like fish was very light color and very elusive. As soon as I was within eyeshot of the fish it was gone. It looked like a drum, I have caught in TX before. If you ever saw the nest you would easily be able to identify the fish. The nest was round and very deep, like 2 feet deep. It was not guarding the nest at all, like I said as soon as it saw me it took off. That would lead me to believe it was not guarding eggs, I didnt see any for that matter. I am stumped on this one.

 

yeah most fresh water fish here will start making beds but wont drop eggs till it warms up a tad.

 

This was a really deep nest. I am thinking about calling the nearest tackle store to see if they can help me out.

 

really? They kill small bass and speck? Didn't know that... I though there were just harmless bottom dwellers.

If I catch one I usually bring it home and give it to my buddy who has a 125 gallon fish tank.

And the company I ordered the rack from got back to me after I told them I flushed the system, and they said they will take it back and issue a refund. Luckily I can send it back free of charge because of the pre-paid sticker for sending back the core.

 

Ive watched them suck up eggs out of a bass nest and also chase small fish right up to the bank. Got one in lake Conway in Orl. with a frog gig. Dam did it put up a fight. Cut it open and it was full of small 1 in. or so fish. Some were bass some were speck.. Do not know y peeps have to turn that shit lose in our lakes and rivers,, pisses me off to no end!!! Jim

The exotic snake thing in the everglades was played up by the media and TV. There are some but not nearly in the numbers they are saying.

I have a buddy who is a professional venomous and exotic snake handler/specialist and said that he has a lot of colleagues that were down south doing research and trying to catch these snakes and they said that they caught a few over a months stretch, but saw no evidence that there is a large or growing population of them. The politicians down there in the everglades lobby'ed capital hill for the money for the "snake" problem to get the money to fund other projects in the everglades like restoring wetlands. Which isn't a bad thing, but they used the snake thing as a front.

Don't believe everything you see and hear on TV!


And if anyone ever watches monster quest on Discovery. If you saw the episode where they were down there trying to find these boas, there is a part where they "finally" catch a snake that just happened to be meandering out across a street. My buddy's colleague was hired by the directors of that show to plant that snake there for them on that street, then shoot the scene so that there was something happening on the show....
