Having a handcuff key is not illegal. If I have it concealed it can be, but on my key ring I am within my rights.
    http://www.flsenate.gov/Laws/Statutes/2011/843.021

I have had family on both sides of the law and I'm one of those people who thinks we are living in troubled times. My dad always carried one (before during and after law enforcement) and I am accustomed to having one. It takes more than one set of cuffs to handcuff me unless you dislocate my shoulders or move my wrist bones around. The same size would make it difficult for me to free myself solo.

If you read 843.02 I would think how it is carried on your key ring would be the issue. Once you have placed the key ring in your pocket or "in within any sock, hose, shoe, belt, undergarment, glove, hat or similar item or clothing or accessory of person." That would be considered concealed. I was just letting you know. I am a third generation cop with ten years experience. Keep your handcuff key I DON'T CARE. Thats why I carry 2 sets of cuffs for the complainers and whiners.

Besides dude I'm not that kinda cop...I have bigger things to worry about than handcuff keys. I could really care less. I just try to help people out here once in a while when I see stuff thats all. Just thought it was an unusual thing to carry

I hear ya man. I have run into "that kinda cop" too many times and get a little defensive. I do like the conversation and listen to advise. Thanks.

It does say in a pocket and unconnected to a key ring though. I do hear what you are saying.

No biggie. The law is probably one of those things that you and I both have issues with. It is far too vague and that is why we have so many criminals are running free in today's society...We could go on forever with that debate and I think in the end we see eye to eye on issues..Be safe out there and remember we are trying our best out there the legal system as a whole needs to be revamped..
Sorry have to make an edit I did not read the entire post, my bad. It does say that about the pocket and key ring but if you read the paragraph before subsection 1 it says, and I'm sorry once again I am not looking at the statue just going from memory, But it says carried in a way but not limited to or something like that. It's all in the way the officer articulates the facts. IE... Once the defendant was placed in custody with his hands securely places behind his back I continued to observe the defendant making furtive movements towards his pocket with his right hand. the defendant was able to reach from behind his back to his right front pocket. I ordered the defendant to stop reaching for his pocket in fear that he might be trying to reach for contraband or possibly destroy evidence. Based on my training and over ten years experience as a law enforcement officer I commonly observe defendants trying to dispose of weapons and other contraband while in attempt to evade Law enforcement prosecution. Also, I have observed custodial arrests where the defendant has retrieved a weapon from there pockets and placed their hands in front of their body while handcuffed and attempted to injure the officer. I searched the defendant incident to arrest and located a small handcuff key in the defendants right front pocket where I observed the furtive movements. based on my observations the defendant will be charged accordingly..Thats just the 10 second version..lol

In a nutshell. It gets scarier out there everyday. The dirtbags and welfare generation are leaving their mark on the world.

The latest story that really haunts me is the gas station mustang execution. I heard about it on a car forum from when I had a mustang. The car was a sn95 96-98 mustang with a super charged 03 cobra motor and 6 speed. Driver stopped to fill up after a late night car cruise/local get together. In the middle of the gas station, on camera, under the lights he is gunned down. His wife/girlfriend is shot in the car. Audio then picks up something like "never mind, it's a stick" and they leave. Granted this is closer to Miami than me but it shook me. Dude wouldn't of stood a chance even if he was armed. http://www.wsvn.com/news/articles/local/21004930834987/

I also had a buddy taken from FSU campus by escaped LA inmates. They found him in bled out from stab wounds in st Augustine. He was a debate coach and student teacher there. I wish I knew the ration of repeat violent offenders. There is just no place for them and they hit the streets fast no matter what they do. I feel like FL is getting overrun. Sorry for the rant. I appreciate what you are doing and I try very hard not to encounter police on duty. I think flying lower to the ground, creating a lower profile, and moving away from trouble is a skill that comes with age and intelligence.

Dude I hear ya man..I gave a guy 44 years in federal prison for carjacking a girls car downtown one night. It was my last vehicle pursuit when i was in TAC. I actually found the car and after the pursuit ran him over. He got up and actually ran on foot where he was tazed and provided customer service. He was trying to pull the gun out of his pocket and shoot us as we rounded the corner. I didn't know it at the time but he just robbed 3 cvs drug stores and carjacked 2 other people in tampa. He fled from FHP and got away.
He had several felony convictions and was still walking around!

Dude that is freaking horrible. almost shed a freakin tear dude. with that news story. Thats why I became a cop. To help stop the senseless crap. I wish the courts would work better with us and the law abiding public at large. There is little justice for victims these days.

I went to that deputy's funeral today in Melbourne, Deputy Pill. Gawd! Heart-wrenching. When they called 10-7 over the radio... 2k people began sobbing.

Melbourne seems to be cool, though. I hear downtown is a happenin' place at night.

That's gread that you were able to make it. I wanted to go, but had some classes I just couldn't miss. I'm glad there was a good turn-out.

Felt bad for my roommate, we live two miles from campus and he didn't know they were closing down the roads and it took him 50 minutes to make it to campus.

Melbourne is a fun place to live. everything you need is close, and the beach is only a couple minutes away. downtown does get pretty crazy. very diverse selection of bars (mostly good), and on the big party holidays (halloween, st. pat. day, etc) they close down mainstreet for about a half mile, put a stage on either end, and have a crazy street party

Yeah, those bagpipes were phenomenal. I had never been to a leo funeral before, and that 10-7.... I found myself standing in front of the bike transmitting. You could here the dispatcher's voice crack. Yes, I cried.
Are you part of Brevard? Sheriff or PD?

Yeah, I heard the streets were locked down tight. I got there before 7am, so didn't notice, though.

St Patty's Day I heard is great in Melbourne! Didn't know there were street closures and bands! We're (thankfully) stuck in Cocoa Beach, and I'm surrounded by tourists and terrible food. Any good Mexican places in FL???
