Any FL members have some vids of their Flowmaster 40 muffler?

I just found out my next paycheck includes $70 of unused holiday pay that I was unaware I'd be receiving, a flowmaster 40 is $71 on Amazon. I take this as sign from God. Just worried about it being too loud or droning. I want a good sound but not something that screams looks at me.

I assume I can just have the mufflers swapped and keep all my stock piping?

The WT4s have always, in my opinion, been the best 20" wheel out there. Looks soo good without being too gaudy.

Flowmasters are junk. They fall apart Inside and actually rob power because they are a chambered muffler. Lots of drone too.

I am looking to replace my flowmaster 40 with a magnaflow 18" muffler. Less drone than the fm and they are a straight through design. They sound better, yield more power, and last longer.

alright, time to voice one of my pet peves on this site. not picking on you johnathan, just saying this since it's on topic. everyone screams at people who get aftermarket cold air intakes. they say it's pointless because you will only gain a couple horsepower, and a gain that small will never be noticable. but as soon as you loose an equally small amount of horsepower (that you'll never be able to feel), it's the end of the world.

just trying to put things in perspective....

Not sure how my post relates to the example with a CAI  My main point was that flowmasters quality sucks. The baffles in mine started to fall apart in under a year...and it's a rust bucket. Plus why add a product to your truck that will hamper performance?

I agree with you in regards to the CAI...they are just noise makers that suck in more dirt.

If I were to go back in time I would just tell my 18 year old self to leave the stock exhaust alone...haha

i was using the CAI as a comparison, saying that if gaining 3 HP from one of those is nothing to special, then why is it such a big deal to loose 3 HP with a muffler?

I won't make a universal statement, but mine has been fine regarding rust. only rust is where i've scratched off the paint on rocks. truck has been around boat ramps most of it's life, and for the last 4-5 years, as the crow flies, i've lived 1 mile from the intercoastal, and less than 3 from the ocean, where everything rusts. it may just be hit or miss with them. i don't think anyonw can truely say

I have had my 40 series for probably a year and a half now with no problems whatsoever. There is slight surface rust which almost any aftermarket muffler gets. And to be honest I don't think these have that much of a drone to them, it's not the loudest muffler either. Just my .02.

I searched them on YouTube and listened to the clips of them on there, really not a very good example.

And as for what Jonathan is saying about them falling apart, which I have dealt with flowmasters in general for the last 15+ yrs, I have yet to see that ever happen with a flowmaster. But, if it were to happen, they have a lifetime warranty on all of their mufflers. Flowmaster makes quality stuff, I have never experienced any issues with them, my dad has been running a dual flowmaster cat back on his '96 impala since 1997 and has never had a problem. Sorry to ramble just hate when people bash a good company.

FWIW, in the early 90's I contacted Flowmaster in regards to a non automotive muffler design. They were very good to deal with. During the discussions, I somehow bought a race muffler from them for my Nissan King Cab. It was the same muffler used on the 240sx race setup.

Overall it lasted many many years, never dyno ran it, power felt good, was moderately quiet but deeply tone loud. It did ultimately rust away, but it was the body, not the baffle.

For this truck I picked up a used Magnaflow 18". Have not installed it yet. That muffler is straight thru, no baffles at all. Basically a fancy oval shaped glass pack.

    Not saying which is better.

As for the CAI, it may not be about peak horsepower increase numbers, just like with a muffler, sometimes it comes down to is the vehicle performing better in the range of rpm I run it.

I have a Volant with scoop, I doubt it makes any noticable increase in power at high rpm, at lower revs it seems to have a bit more pull. As for the sound, the CAI I got from a member here was lined with sound mat, and I capped the fender inlet. Sound increase isn't there.

I expect the greatest gains overall will come with the MAF calibrator.

kinda sounds like hit or miss with flowmaster, there are plenty of complaints about rust, but sounds like you guys had some good experiences, I do know for a fact a lot of shops recommend magnaflow over flowmaster, they say better quality, not sure why the real reason is, maybe stocking, marketing, pricing, who knows? but they do.

Had a rustmaster on a 22r it was coming apart at under 2 years old. Go with a magnaflow at least they stand behind what they sell..
