Ok guys I need some help. Every thread on this topic turns into a pissing match and I don't get the answers I am looking for. I am trading/sale my prerunner and want to get a 4x4. I have been set on the TRD sport 4x4 because I personally like all the looks and I thought 4x4 was just that...4x4. I didn't know the difference until I ran across it this morning that the TRD Off Road 4x4 was a locking diff and the 4x4 sport was not. I have spent the entire morning googling this at work and everyone seems to have a biased opinion one way or the other. Basically I don't want to take this loss on getting rid of my truck just to get a truck that says 4x4 but isn't a "good" 4x4. So with that saidand all "looks" of the truck aside why is the Sport 4x4 not considered as good as the Offroad 4x4 (differences)? not counting the suspension just the Locker/Limited slip or open. Will the Sport 4x4 be very capable going off road. (I usually have mud, really soft beach sand) etc....I am trying to figure this out any comments could help cause I really like the sport but I don't want to invest in it and get stuck right off the bat haha....I might be thinking of this wrong so thanks guys!

The sport comes with an LSD (limited slip differential) and the Offroad comes with an electronic locking differential.

Locking means that when you engage the rear locker both rear wheels will spin with no slip. The LSD will still slip and lose power to one of the wheels in the rear in certain situations, the locker will not.

The offroad package is much more capable than the sport package.

If you plan on using your 4x4, then get the offroad package, or you will kick yourself later.

Imo 4x 4 is more then enough, but locker does help in some cases and is nice to have

I have a TRD offroad with rear locker
And am very avid offroad with it

    IMO
the rear locker is really only a benefit if you find yourself doing articulation/flex
As long as all 4 tires have relatively equal weight on them, then the locker is of no benefit

Also im sure Colin can vouch for this, I have seen TRD sport 4x4 go the same places I went with my TRD offroad...but they had to smash the skinny pedal a little harder than me

With that said the typical truck user wont be able to tell the difference in sport vs offroad package
Major difference to the typical owner is cosmetic , chrome vs color match

Being a TRD offroad owner that very regularly tests the limits of my truck... I wont have anything else but lockers ... wish I had front locker too

I like the look of the sport but everyone seems to be all for the lockers. I plan on doing a lot more off roading and know the offorad is "better" for that reason. I also am trying to get a feel of how capable the Sport 4x4 will be since I just don't really like the look of the offroad with all the chrome and no scoop (just my opinion) and don't want to deal with trading, buying etc to replace it all. So say I get bogged down in some soft sand pretty bad the LSD will be able to get me out? I am just confused how one wheel getting more power than the other is a good thing when getting stuck vs both wheels..Just want to make the right choice this time lol

I have never needed my rear locker in the sand
It helps having the rear locker in 2wd , for the sand
But in 4HI in sugar sand, I dont need the locker

The only time the locker has benefited me is: when one rear tire gets light/off ground

Its my recomendation that you buy the sport
then find an offroad TRD at a scrap yard and pull its rear end

Its hard to say which is cheaper: buying the sport, and adding the locker
or buying the offroad and replacing the chrome

I was able to upgrade my rear bumper for cheap
and had my grill painted cheap
    and simply removed the badges

my truck now appears to be a sport, minus the scoop

the scoop is actually a hinderance offroad, it blocks your view over the hood
I prefer NO scoop when offroad
plus I already have a lady, so no loss without the scoop :)

I so wish Toyota would put a V8 in the Tacoma
Dodge does it, hell even mitsubishi puts a V8 in their midsize truck

If you a get an Offroad model, its a lot easier to swap bumpers or paint your bumpers to get ride of the chrome than to swap in a locker.

Trust me...I think you will be much happier with a locker.

There is no comparison between an LSD and a locker, the locker is just...better.

If you didn't ever plan to take your truck offroad...then the sport version would be a winner. But if you have any intention of taking the truck offroad...then the offroad version is an easy choice. Looks can be fixed easily...and a hood scoop is totally non functional in these trucks anyways.

With a locker you can creep over obstacles and take more time...without a locker you need to rely on momentum and speed...and that is where you end up braking shit.
