Would depend on why you don't have compression. Could be a blown head gasket, a hole burnt in the top of a piston, busted timing belt, etc. None of it's a cheap fix, but some of them are definitely more expensive than others.

On the other hand, with deference to Jason as the resident Toy tech, it didn't sound like the engine was free spinning to me. Sounds more like an ignition or fuel system issue, either of which could be a EEC problem. Or it might be some sort of security feature that got activated when you changed the battery. Our Honda is like that. Have to enter a code into the radio to get it to run after unhooking the battery.

 

Yep a pal in Tampa changed the battery in his wife's 2 Y.O. diesel VW . Then it would not start..
Tow truck ride to the dealer. You have to hook jumper cables to a stand by battery on the FN thing. brain had to be re-flashed. 325 beans

 

ya I know, its just been a long day and Im just fusterated that we werent able to get the truck started up again, and ive searched the the interwebs all day in search of answers, and yet, yielding nothing...so Im gonna head to bed and just get my truck towed to toyota and find out whats wrong

 

Keep us posted for sure. I'm interested to hear what they find. I can tell you this much, unless you have an aftermarket alarm with a kill switch in it, it won't be a security thing. Toyota doesn't have stuff like that unless you somehow lost communication with the immobilizer system. Either way, let us know what happens. It is pretty difficult to diag a no start problem, really most problems, over the internet with just a short video clip of the issue.

Geez, you guys act like mudding is tantamount to packing your truck full of dynamite and setting it off. Back in the day we used to have our trucks in the mud every weekend and sometimes during the week. We rarely ever had a mud-related break down--at least not any that wouldn't have happened with any other sort of off-roading. Broke a lot of U-joints, sometimes an axle shaft, but very seldom did we ever have other issues. In fact, I think the only thing I ever had fail due to mud was a vacuum pump that locked up on me.

Water, on the other hand, did cause some problems. I hydro-locked an engine once and I fried an EEC in my YJ when I fell in a hole that was nearly chest deep.

But, we weren't replacing brakes once a month or wheel bearings or clutches. Nor were we killing critical engine accessories (I removed the vacuum pump pulley and got a shorter belt and the truck ran fine without it...just burned a little rich).

Mud ain't too much worse than anything else. It's just a bigger PITA to clean up.

 

Some day when the gen1 is in gen1 heaven, and you have a gen2 come back and tell me how great mud is

 

Pull the plugs and check for water.

 

My 1st gen loved the mud. Now she's in heaven, I tested the waters with the 93 pickup and it was a breeze. That's what concerns me about getting a 2nd gen.

 

Haha, okay, didn't realize it was a generation specific issue. However, I'm hoping that my first gen is the last vehicle I have, but, at the risk of getting kicked off the island, if something untoward happens to it and I have to replace it, it won't be with a 2nd gen. It'll either be an older P/U if I can find one like that purdy gray one you had, another 1st Gen...


or a Jeep TJ/YJ or maybe even a Frontier as long as they don't up-size them by that time like Toyota did with the Tacoma.

 

Well, I got all my paraphernalia so I'll probably start pulling apart my interior again tomorrow to install my CB. yay...

it's a 2008ish corolla, only happens on cold start ups, then once goes away, doesn't come back til the next cold start up
