    But yeah, if you want a selectable, then the ARB is the way to go. And you get an onboard air source as a side benefit. Just make sure it's installed by someone who knows what they are doing and will guarantee the work--in writing. However, since you probably don't drive in much snow and ice down there in Miami, you could probably get away with a Detroit Locker for considerably less. You'd just have to be careful on wet roads until you learned how to drive it (if you accelerate going around a corner, the locker will lock up and the rear end may slide out from under you on a wet road). You basically have to coast through corners and accelerate once you get straight. They are also more dependable than the ARB mainly due to simplicity.

    It's too bad Eaton doesn't have their E-locker for an 8.4 rearend.

    Look at East Coast Gear Supply's third member swap program. Highly reputable shop doing the locker install.

    And even if you're not comfortable installing the 3rd yourself, any decent mechanic will be able to.

    ARB all the way. Love mine, hopefully I'll have one in the front diff soon.

    I use a Viair compressor and tank. I have a separate regulator to keep the air pressure at 90 psi going to the locker and the tank goes up to 150 for tools and airing up tires.

    so lee, our 2nd gen base models have the 8.4in housings correct? I believe the TRD Offroads have smaller ones?

    Simplicity, basically. You don't have to plumb air lines, or have an air source. You don't have to worry about air leaks or blowing out actuator diaphragms. It's basically like the e-locker in the TRD OR models. Push a button, or flip a switch and it locks electronically. But like I said, they don't currently make them for Toyota rearends.

    I couldn't tell you how reliable or not they are though. Haven't really heard.

    It really comes down to personal preferance and how deep
    Your wallet is weather you go with a ARB or detroit locker.

    I think the arb set up is a little more worth it becAse like
    Stated you get an air source onboard. Very useful.

    Another thing to consider, does anyone else drive your vehicle? If so it would worry me with Detroit and them not understanding how it works.

    It's also worth mentioning that you can also run an ARB off a CO2 tank. Don't have to have the compressor. CO2 tanks can also air up your tires and run air tools. If you need a big name endorsement, Jlee runs his ARBs with a CO2 tank. Look up his build thread in the 1st Gen builds section. That's an insane build. The thread ought to be titled: "This is what happens when a guy who runs a fab shop has the time and cash to go nuts on his truck." :D

    It's really not as bad as all that. If they drive it regularly, then they should learn/be taught how to drive it. If they only drive it once in a great while, then it's not that big a deal. Worse that's likely to happen is some premature tire wear from cornering with the diff locked. The rear end could slide out from under them on a wet road if they romp on it, but the same thing can happen with a factory LSD, or even an open diff in a truck with a light rear end.

    I had one in a GT Mustang I used to have before I really understood how it worked and I never had it get unexpectedly squirrely on me. If it did get loose, it was because I was intentionally being heavy on the skinny pedal. In that respect, it wasn't much different than the factory LSD.

    I've heard a Detroit can be scary on ice, but, hell, I'm from FL. Driving on ice scares me on principle. :eek: And there's not much ice in Miami. ;)
