colton, are you in virginia right now? i got in on the auto train this morning. it's sooooooo cold. i forget every year that it gets this bad.

 

Yo Colton. I'm doing some research on expanding my tool arsenal like you. I went up to a welding supply place today.

 

Awesome! What tools are you looking at getting? Anything interesting at the welding supply store?

 

A welder I'm just in the research stage at the moment. Also have to get an estimate from an electrician to get an outlet in the garage. I don't think my mom would like me to tell her she can't use her dryer because I'm farting around in the garage.

 

Gotcha, reason I asked is because the welding supply store up this way has everything under the sun as far as auto/home repair/welding stuff. How many amps does your compressor draw? I wouldn't think being a 12 gal with the 1.5HP motor it would trip the circuit, unless you have other things you're running.

I determined I don't have enough room in our garage for a compressor (already have a 3 gal, should be ok for tires) so I went out and got a cordless Craftsman C3 Impact wrench. Came with 2 batteries and a charger.

 

We put one in the garage by ourselves. I'm sure Ryan can give you instructions on how to do it, he's an electrician.

 

I don't have any problems running the compressor. It runs off a regular 110. I was talking about the welder because the ones I'm looking at need a 220 volt outlet and we don't have one in the garage.

Cool, now you don't have to wait for the compressor to fill back up if you are using it continuously. A 3 gal could probably also run a ratchet if you aren't continuously using it and for most things you aren't.

 

I may have to ask him about it. I'm just not sure if my dad will be keen on the idea. He tends to have concerns and what if's about stuff often.

 

I hear ya, it shouldn't be that much.

 

Cool, welding is an awesome skill to learn. My uncle welds as a side job and does everything from railings to custom lift kits (drop brackets for the domestic brands).

 

I think so to and that's neat you have access to somebody with the talent. It seems to have infinite uses. In my fantasy grown up world I would like to have a decent sized garage and really get into some off road fabrication.

 

Yeah it's great because he only lives 5 miles down the road from me. Not far away from some custom fab work for the truck.

I would love a huge outfitted garage like you said. Working on custom trail rigs and fabbing things up for them would be a dream come true...

 

i was in 4lol and was tryin to go up this steep ass rock and i just said fuck it and pined it to the floor till it grabed and i went flyin up the rock lol and yeah that probly did it in right there i got a video of it is pretty sweet lol and yeah!! be a welder like me :^) hahah u wana buy me a miller axcess 300? it would be a nice xmas present

 

heck yeah I want to see the video and 4lol is that when you put in in 4wd and giggle

I'm sure it would be a great present but I don't think I could justify that much of an expense. So did you finish school out there and get certified?

 

and Nick have you had any time to work with a Hobart? Would you recommend one or should I just spring for the extra $200 and get the Miller 180? From the specs they look like the same unit with the exception of infinite voltage adjustability and the autoset on the miller but the autoset seems more for somebody that doesn't want to look at the chart

 

jason, i could give you detailed instructions on adding that outlet. its not rocket science....really. is your electric panel in the garage?

Yes it is. I know the house has 220 in it because multiple things are 220 in the kitchen and laundry room. Would it be better to wire it right next to the box for simplicity and use a beefy extension cord or better to get the outlet to the bay I would work in?

 

it really depends on what you want to do. i would run it to the area you need it. extension cords of that size will cost you an arm and a leg.

 

i have been certified since high school im gettin a bachelors in welding and welding technology and no ive been foolin around and havent been getting it done but come on its only like 10grand thats pocket change ill make u a deal u buy me that ill make u what ever you want for ur truck hahah and its on my phone i gota upload it some how and then ill put it up here but u dont wana take the cvs out cuz all the dust and dirt and shit will get in there and mess stuff up even more and its kinda too late for that the whole front axle is already out on the floor in the garage just gota order parts and wait for um but yep you got it right thats 4lol i get all giggly like a school girl when i put it in 4 hahaha
