sorry alfuh, i guess i was wrong. everytime someone explained a Detroit to me it was that it only locks under torque, but it appears that you were right.

Actually though, if you look at the explanations of how a Lockrite works, it does lock up under torque. The Detroit does appear to unlock as the outside tire over-runs the inside one though. The way I've always heard it explained was that the unlocked side will never spin slower than the locked side, only faster.

Fronts are the big ones rears are the small ones . set on (oem) no lift . was thinking of adding the 1in. what do you think ??? top of the well in rear is 32 in.. front is 29in. as it sits

hey Jason (or anyone else here), do you know how to install a Detroit locker? i think i could do it but i dont wanna screw it up.

 

You figure out which notch and tell me. I don't want to do it more than once so make sure you get it right darn it!

 

I read you have to be able to set up gears and backlash. Since it's not a lunchbox locker.

 

i heard you dont have to set up gears if youre not changing anything else, just have to keep track of what shims came from what side

 

I did basically the same with no real concerns. I was able to have the time to do the install since I got another third to build up.

Got the TrueTrac diff, and new carrier bearings. Pressed these on to the new diff. I also bought new bolts for the ring gear. I would suggest using a propane torch to loosen the loctites grip when removing the bolts. Also, plan on grinding the sockets edge flat for better grip on the low head height bolts.

Depending upon which rear end you have, it either has shims that need to be noted for location when removed, or it has the adjusters which will require some setup. The non locking 8.4 diff has shims and is pretty easy to do.

Ensure the ring gear is clean, and the mating surface flat. Clean the ring gear threads of old loctite with a tap to ensure a proper torque.

To do this plan on having a hydraulic press to install the bearings and hold the ring gear while torquing. You should also have some supports to ensure the carrier bearing cages do no get damaged when pressing onto the diff.

The task is not difficult, more a pain to have everything ready, parts, tools and ability let the truck sit if needed.

The TrueTrac has certainly helped my Sport, provided you can figuire out how to deactivate the Auto LSD stuff from the button.
