When I bought my TrueTrac, I was all over the internet researching. The internals are the same. The housing may be slightly different, honestly I forgot.

This link was a big help

    http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/#rear

FWIW, since I did not accomplish a gearing change, I bought the entire 50k mile third from TAC1 when he bought his clutch type locking Toyota diff assembly.

I went with a TrueTrac. Picked up new ring gear bolts, and bought new oem carrier bearings from TAC1 also. I pressed the bearings onto the new diff. Then before disassembling the replacement third, I checked the gear clearance and noted it. Pulled the diff out of the third, and removed the bolts. These were Loctited and required some propane torch heat. Removed the ring gear, cleaned all threads and used a stone to ensure the bolt holes were flat. Installed the ring gear with new bolts and Loctite. Reassembled the diff and installed.

What makes this model diff good is the girdle that prevents the carrier bearings from spreading and resulting in a broken ring gear or carrier.

Also, this diff uses shims to set the side to side position of the carrier. The Danas and the elock Toyotas use a special threaded ring. This eliminates the need for shims, but it is a must do to reset the side clearance correctly.

These diffs are easy to do yourself. The special tools are not really special. A quality dial indicator and magnetic or clamp on base to check the gear clearance before and after. A hydraulic press to install carrier bearings and clamp the diff to remove the ring gear bolts and reinstall them. Plus a good quality torque wrench. I did make one tool and if needed you can borrow it if you see the need. An aluminum spacer to press the bearings on.

If you are changing gear ratios, then have ECGS or someone that does diffs do the work. The tools to remove the pinion bearings and time to set pinion depth makes those guys a bargain.

FWIW, thirds are out there used or at the junkyards for short money.

    Wes, what brand CV failed?

Did it fail from a steering input or up and down wheel movement (too much droop)?

Never followed the topics, but have seen mention of installing Tundra CV's into the Tacoma's. Might be an option or might not. Not something I follow closely since I have 2wd.

It was a sur trac cv that failed at the outer. The aftermarket ones are known to fail easily though. My other side was toyota and it's still going strong. Not to mention I had the front end locked, drooped and turned when it failed. Took the truck to gattos and they gave me another sur trac cv for free as mine was under warranty.

The tundra cvs are more for long travel 1st gens. All in all a cv is cake to replace and it was pretty fast this time around.

Im all for DIY on my truck but I do draw a line when it comes to the diffs being that they cost so much just to buy the parts I might as wellspend the extra cash and have some one set it up properly and it comes with a 5 year warranty from ECGS.

Also, my current diff is a junkyard find. Only cost me 400 shipped off ebay, but now that cheap find might be coming back to bite me. Ill find that out when I drain thediff today.

This whole weord noise thing is getting old. Put my truck in the air again today and spun the tires and the clicking noise is coming fron the drivers side rear wheel this time. It almost sounds like tire rub, but its obviously not.

Understand. ECGS does make it difficult to DIY. The prices are reasonable and the reputation seems good from what you read.

Yeah I already have a front ecgs, so why not make the set complete? I just oicked up some diff fluid so im gonna drain it and see what I find and if I dont find anything im gonna pull the axles and see if there is any abnormal wear on the axles or new bearings that would be causing the noise.

Got a visit from Fink today. Installed his new wheels/tires, programmed his tire sensors, and aligned it for him. I like the wheels and tires. They are so cute next to mine.

Again this is a pretty easy install for the diff. But, with his third, and a diff, you are getting up there in price.

What diff did you want to install?

Jupiter, is not far for me (25 minutes), so it could be swapped over pretty easy if you brought the parts or sent them ahead of time. We are supposed to be going to Lake Wales for a bicycle event in early August...

hey for the Konig Six shooter wheels do they only come in a 17" wheel? thats what ive seen so far. I was helping a friend out install his lift on his Taco today and he had a set of Konig six shooters to replace his stock sports and without the center caps I really did love the way they looked on his truck and is really tempting to get a set but I was hoping they had a set of 16s instead of 17s
