Rail mounted. But its near the tool box and hi lift Jack. Kinda figured maybe all that is interfering with it. Not sure, but i have been thinking about getting a tailgate mount to try it out.

You can see it on the left side of this picture.

 

True, I am trying to figure out the spot I am going to go with next. I like spruces spot or I guess the taillight since I have a cover on all the time.

 

This is where I got the idea for my mount. I didn't make mine exactly like his, I changed some measurements but the shape is the same.

Mine is mounted just behind the cab on the drivers side kinda like Jason's. I take it off (unscrew it) when I put the cover on. I have no issues. I can hear everyone just fine including Wes on that great little hand held. Jon has a hand held to with an external fire stick and works great for him..I have a cobra 29 and really like the radio. However, it is made for 18 wheelers and is humongo. Get the little hand held with an external whip mount option. This way you can put the thing in the glove box when not in use..

Yeah I am leaning real hard towards the hand held, I won't use it enough to have some huge piece out all the time, 1-2 month max. Do all CBs need tuning? Even the hand held ones?

 

anyone have a recommendation for an antenna for this? I know jack squat about antennas but I would like to get somewhat of a range out of it.

Look into the Cobra 75, small footprint and can be out of the way when it's not needed.

 

I've got a cheap realistic cb my wife's uncle gave me & mounted it inside the console. I'm like you don't use it a lot & in there its out of the way plus my console just collects junk so that limits it. Haha
I've noticed a lot of people run Firestik II's, I went with the firefly cause its lighter & a little cheaper. So far I like it & works good, had a good swr reading right out of the package.

 

This is how I mounted mine.

 

Tailgate is a terrible spot for a CB antenna. other than upgrading to a nicer radio, the best thing i ever did for my CB setup, was moving it towards the center of the truck. my first two antennas were mounted by the tail light/tailgate. terrible range and mediocre sound quality, both sending and receiving.

 

Hmmm, maybe i can go up a size with the firestik and move the toolbox a bit to put the antenna in the front rail centered. And also eventually upgrade the radio itself.

 

Jason - do you have a ground wire from the mount to frame? That could be part of your problem.
