Ball joint spacers and lift blocks, am I doing it right?
I hate you Toyota solid axle. Even though I have hung great new parts on you, you still fight me all the way. You're not happy with a super cool new fabricated housing. You don't like high steer and oh yea no more crappy trunnion bearings. New wheel bearing, you're not even happy about that.

This thing loves to fight me.

    A little tech:

So to properly set up a solid axle steering knuckle you new a Toyota special service tool. It basically aligns the axle shaft in the steering knuckle so the axle doesn't tear up seals. The way a knuckle is aligned the bottom trunnion bearing sets the height and the top the pre-load. Normally if you're just putting new trunnion bearings in you just re-install the same shims top and bottom and it's usually right. With a new housing you're starting from scratch.

I tried to find a special service tool or SST. Good luck with that, Marlin has it on his site, for 400 dollars and out of stock. So getting an SST was out. I starting thinking about it and the SST allows you to set the height with the 3rd member still attach. With my 3rd not installed yet I had an idea. Basically I bolted the spindle to the knuckle and made a sleeve to go over my axle shaft to center it in the spindle. Once centered in the spindle I adjusted the shims and just visually made sure the shaft was centered with a flashlight and mechanics mirror.

Once the bottom was set you just have to play with the shims on top until you get the break away pre-load within factory spec. Factory spec according to my 85 service manual is 6.6 to 13.2 pounds of break away force, my passenger side knuckle came out at 12 with a .55 shim stack bottom and .82 top. I have to do the other side still.

I was hoping to get it all done this weekend, but even with getting the knuckles set it won't happen. Trail-Gear sent me a 30 spline short side shaft, but I need and ordered a 27. So I'll have to wait on them to ship the correct piece.

All this being said I still love working on my old truck, even though that love isn't always returned.
