So I had my eye on a cheap topper (not so gently used, $250 on Craigslist if anyone is interested). It ended up being for a long bed, so I ordered some sliders from 4xInnovations instead. My plan was to weld them on myself with my HF flux core welder/spatter gun. After doing a little more reading, I don't know that it will be up for the task. Thoughts?

Oh, and in case anyone is interested in the topper:
    LINKY

The ladder rack has been removed and the holes epoxied. The seals around the windows and the back look good. It needs some general cleanup (maybe repainting), but it is in otherwise good condition. Well worth the $250 given how pricey most are.

Mine were welded in with flux core wire (with a small 110V Miller machine). The welds ain't exactly what I'd call pretty, but they are hanging in there. I won't say I abuse them, but they are frequently doing their job. That said, between Timbo and Todd, somebody should be able to help ya out.

I've heard both, that 110 doesn't have adequate penetration and that 110 is strong enough.

I'd be much obliged! Their site was saying that they had the sliders in stock, so I'll keep you posted so that we can coordinate.

I had planned on using this as an excuse to try my hand at welding again, but I'm definitely thinking I should leave a project this critical (and pricey) to a more capable machine and a more skilled person. I'll focus on something less daunting with the spatter gun. :D

I guess it depends on how hard you beat on them. Like I said, mine have stood up to 4 years of use, but most of it has been hard clay like what's out at Citrus. They have been used on a few rocks at Hardrock, but nothing really extreme. I don't think I'd hesitate to put them in a more extreme situation though. I have also frequently used jack stands under them to support the truck and they haven't moved. The only complaint I have about them is the welds aren't as pretty as they would be with a gas welder.

But, yeah, if you're not confident in your skills, especially welding vertically and upside down, it's always more fun to have someone more skilled deal with it for ya. :D (In point of fact, I had a friend do mine and he was a welder for CSX for most of his career so he knew what he was doing even with the small machine.)

Great thing about mig and gas. Don’t have to do vertical ups lol

I hated vertical welds with a stick and I was almost hopeless upside down. Did pretty good flat, but I guess most people could. We pushed about 140' of 4" steel pipe welded in 10' sections under the road at McDill once and then had to pull it all back out because it ended up way off target. Pulled the whole thing out in one piece from about 4' down, up over the back of the 12' long pit, and out onto the ground. None of my welds broke so I guess I wasn't a terrible welder, haha. I'm so shaky anymore though, I doubt I could make a nice bead (and I've never welded with a gas welder).

Okay, has anyone with a 3rd Gen T4R (1996-2002) or a 1st Gen Taco (1995-2000) ever managed to get the vehicle into key fob programming mode? I got Mom a new key fob for her b-day because after I had to confiscate the original one due to her inadvertently rolling down the back window and not noticing it, she says she doesn't feel as safe without having the panic button on the fob. I got the thing in today and I tried several times to get it to enter programming mode and met with zero success. Of course, I'm currently sick as a dog with a sinus infection (Mom's Thanksgiving gift to me...yay...o_O), so it's entirely likely I screwed up the sequence inadvertently.

I'd look this up on the 4runner forum to be sure the two procedures I have are correct, but I'm sick so I'm being a lazy arse. Basically what I'm asking is if anyone has ever managed to hold their mouth just right and get the sequence to work?

Haha, unlocked hubs wouldn’t get ya very far here.

Weather was great. Got down to around 29 Friday night while in the tents but it was low to mid 60s in daylight. The scenery was fantastic as well.
