What would you like to know, we own a Lexus store. It's basically a fancy 4Runner lol.

Same chassis and all that? 4.7 and 5 speed auto, correct? Any years to avoid? Is it a manual transfer case? Timing chain or belt? Anything other info I should be privy to?

Yes, I am almost certain it's the same chassis as the 4Runner, 4.7L V8 (2UZ-FEV8) w/ Timing Belt, 5 Speed Trans and it's a manual transfer case. They are pretty damn bullet proof, we see them w/ hundreds of thousands of miles on them.

Anyone have experience with changing the fuel pump? I'm trying to figure out it's it's easier to drop the tank or pull the bed. Slowly getting things ready for this :spy:

Right on, I was looking for v8 4runners and started cross shopping the lexus when I saw Demello offroads truck. The fact they come with manual t case is enough to sway me. What is the timing belt change interval, 100k?

Get a buddy to help either way, if you decide to drop the tank, make sure it is as empty as possible.

Ball joint spacers and lift blocks, am I doing it right?
I'm most likely going to drive down to Port St Lucie next weekend to check this 97 Runner out. Automatic, 4x4, Locker, 228K miles, brand new 32's with 2.5 inches of lift for 3600.00 obo. Here's the one hiccup the current owner says it has a knock in the motor that was there when he bought it at 206K, He drove it for a couple years that way. But, it also comes with a complete spare motor. On the off chance it's just a noisy lifter or valves need adjusting I could repair the current motor and have the spare to drop into my 89. If not, put the good motor in the 97 and rebuilt the one I would have to pull for the 89. I think at 3 grand it would be a good deal.

@Taco No Baka you know a bunch about the 3.4 what do you think about the knock?

Actually, Guy, I really don't know that much about the 3.4L. I've never had to get into mine. All I've done to mine is replace the plugs, wires, and IABV, and removed the throttle body to clean it. You could probably tell as well as me if it was valve train noise or a rod knock. All I can tell you really is that you should replace the radiator first thing. Less than a hundred bucks for a new Denso radiator is cheap insurance against the infamous strawberry milkshake that will destroy the tranny. Also try to find out when the timing belt was last changed. It should have been around 180k. It's not that critical since, from what I understand, the pistons won't hit the valves if the belt fails, but it would be good to know.

The OGT has a weird rattle in that null zone when the engine isn't loaded either way (accell or decell) that I suspect is excessive clearance in the rod or main bearings, which is why I want @Key-Rei 's 3.4L so I can have it as a rebuildable spare, but if I ever have to pull the engine out of the OGT, I would probably just slap some new rod bearings in it and call it good.

Other than that, they seem to have leaky valve covers, rear mains, and oil pan gaskets a lot. Had to replace the OGT's valve cover gaskets right after I got her and Natty had to have a new oil pan gasket and rear main seal.

Also, if it makes any difference to you, the one you're looking at doesn't have Limited bumpers. The side panels look right, but unless it was something they started doing in the later years, Limiteds had painted bumpers and driving lights on the front bumper.

Also allow me to recommend running Castrol Edge full syth in it. I change my oil every 6 months with probably less than 1000 miles on it. The first few years, the oil was coming out black but the last two or three oil changes the oil looked almost brand new on the stick and translucent going into the oil container, which tells me the Castrol is really cleaning the crude out of the engine from whatever crap the POs were using.
