Well, I have a new toy thanks to @Key-Rei . I finally got my hands on his 5VZ. The block probably going to turn out to be a lawn ornament, thanks to a coolant leak in the #2 cylinder leading to some pretty bad rust on the cylinder wall, which is a real shame because the other cylinders look brand freaking new. They still have the crosshatching on them from the factory hone. But I intend to learn everything I can about the 5VZ from it and there are a lot of good parts on it. I'm pretty sure the heads are salvageable as well as the intake, and the bottom end. I plan to take it up to the machine shop when I go to have my new wheel bearing pressed in and have the machinist take a look and see if he thinks he can save it, but I doubt I'll be that lucky.

Still, as much as I hate working on them while they are in the vehicle, I truly enjoy playing with an engine once it's out of the vehicle, tearing it down, reassembling it better, stronger, faster...not that much can be done with a 5VZ that wouldn't cost a small fortune, but sometimes just freshening it up can give you some pep that you hadn't noticed you were missing.

Well, I ran the block by the machine shop today (along with my spindle to have the new wheel bearing installed) and I had the machinist take a look at it. He said he could save it by resleeving the cylinder, but I'd have about $300 invested in that one hole in addition to anything else they did to the block, like honing the other cylinders or hot tanking it to clean it up, let alone resurfacing the heads.

I'm thinking for less than $300, surely the salvage yard would sell me a serviceable bare 5VZ block. So I'm basically back to the idea of the engine being a teaching aid, helping me learn the ins and outs of the engine. One of the first things I plan on using it for is figuring out what fittings I need to hook up my mechanical oil pressure gauge while keeping the OEM sensor in place. I might eventually swap the heads out for the ones in the OGT which have a lot of valve train clatter, but that probably won't be until I'm just about ready to go up to 35s.

tbh I was gonna suggest trying a sleeve, but i completely forgot to comment haha. for that price, you could probably find a good 5vz block like you said. but itd have to be a bare block by itself, I paid $700 for my complete 3rz and that was a steal lol. im pretty sure theres one out there somewhere that youd be able to use!

Cripes. It seems like all I ever do anymore is work on the OGT. Right before Richloam when I was replacing a CV axle from the previous Citrus trip, I noticed a bad inner axle seal and a bad LBJ (that was only 3 months old). I go to fix the axle seal and I discovered a bad wheel bearing and that my LCA bushings were completely blown out. I had the new wheel bearing installed yesterday and replaced the LCA on that side with one I got from @Key-Rei and of course, that requires removing all the bolts from the steering rack. Somehow, in the process of doing all that, I managed to loose my freaking wheel spacer. How the hell does something that big just vanish? I think I must have put it on the trailer and it fell off at some point between here and the machine shop. Why I did that instead of setting it by the jack stand like I normally do, I couldn't tell you. So now I'm waiting on a new wheel spacer from Wheeler's.

I was going to replace the driver's side LCA today, but I decided, screw it. I'm taking the day off.

So, so far this year, I've replaced the following crap on the OGT:

    UBJs (L&R)
    LBJs (L&R, twice)
Rebuilt the entire front brake system, rebuilt the calipers, new rotors, new pads.
    Replaced 2 CV axles
Changed the front diff gear oil
    Replaced an inner axle seal
Replaced a wheel bearing plus new wheel seals
Replaced an LCA (with the second one pending)
Had the truck aligned 3 times, so far, with a 4th time waiting to be done after I finish with the LCA replacement
Patched my radiator 3 times with JB Weld
Flushed the coolant system and put new coolant in it (3 years early).

At least I managed to find the resources to upgrade to a badass front bumper. That was pretty much my only upgrade unless you count armoring my radiator, which has yet to be proven effective at this time). Oh, and I finally put in the Scan Gauge I got from Todd @ the last Camp & Ride since my temperature gauge is apparently unreliable. The rest of my cash has been going to maintenance. :pout:

Does everybody else have this much trouble, or is it just me?

(Ironically, now that I have a good replacement starter, my old starter hasn't given me hardly any trouble except when it was actually soaking wet at Richloam, but it hasn't had so much as a hiccup since.)

Probably something do do with how I beat on my truck so hard? I'm not the only one that does that though. Or maybe something about 1st Gens being PsOS?

Or maybe it's about the spool in the front. Well, I am sold on that. I just don't have the cash flow to upgrade to stronger shit that can handle it and if I did, I might as well SAS the truck. But the current plan is to get a trail gear trans crossmemeber and then start seriously saving for the regear which will include dumping the spool for a True Trac LSD unit. It'll be disappointing to loose capability, but I guess not having to do so many repairs to the frontend will have to be a consolation.

Front being locked and how wide your tires are with the aggressive tread. You don’t drive the truck much besides to trails. You blow through more suspension parts then anyone else here.

I can't disagree with any of that, but you forgot to add how aggressive my right foot is too (at least on the trails, I drive like an old man on the streets), haha. I fairness though, I very very rarely bang on the rev limiter (I only remember doing it once at the first annual meet I attended) so maybe my right foot isn't that aggressive.
