I was planning to go all in with a 12lb'r. Just need a couple of guys like @kaijac03 and Dom to wield it for me, lol.

Anyway, today is not my day. Had an appointment with the probate lawyer and that went okay, but I left my phone at home forgot my gum and then on the way home my A/C didn't appear to be working. Had it off with the windows down on the way to the lawyer's office, but it was pretty warm when I came back out. So I was about halfway home when I noticed the T4R didn't seem to be getting cooler, a short investigation revealed it was set to defrost. I switched it to the dash vents and the air was still about ambient temperature. Now I'm starting to panic. I don't need to spend money fixing Natty's A/C when the OGT needs to go in for attention. So I figured when I got home I'd check the compressor to see if it was turning, then I'd put the refrigerant can on it. However, after confirming the compressor was turning on and off properly, I happened to notice I had the temperature dial turn just passed halfway to the warm side.:smack:I turned it all the way cool and instantly cold air started blowing out of the vents. So there was no A/C issue and I was getting worked up over nothing because apparently, I'm an idiot. Still doesn't top my mom driving her car for two years thinking the passenger side window was broken and wouldn't roll down when she finally took it in to the shop to get it fixed and it turned out it was just the child lock on the driver's door controls was locked, but I have a feeling I'll get there some day, lol.

I'm second guessing myself now. I'm wondering if I should go with 4.56s instead of 4.88s. The benefits would be stronger gears, and with 35s at 70 MPH I'll only be turning a little less than 2600 RPMs. The downside is I wouldn't have as low a crawl ratio, but I should still have a lot more power than I have now (3.90s, ~2400 RPMs on 33s @70 MPH). The benefits to the 4.88s would be a lower crawl ratio, less stalling, less wear on the clutch, and less work for the engine off-road. The down side is weaker gears, and I'd be turning ~2800 RPMs at 70 MPH on 35s...about 3000 RPMs on 33s.

If I go with 4.56s, I can get a decent interstate gear that doesn't have the engine screaming to do the speed limit, and I can get a 4.70:1 Taco Box, and still get a ridiculously low crawl ratio, but that might take a while and will probably be expensive so I'd be wheeling with the 4.56s for a while.

    Any thoughts?

I’m asking myself the same question with 4.88 vs 5.29 on 37s. I think I’m gonna go with 4.88 and eventually get a taco box or atlas at some point in the future. For the majority of the wheeling we do 4.56 will be fine for you I think. I’m most likely going 4.88 so I’m not turning 3100rpm at 75mph. I’m jelly of the 3rd gens with their double overdrive. If I had that I’d go 5.29.

3.4 i assume? After all I've looked at I've decided to go 4.88 when I do 35s. But my truck isn't a crawler whatsoever lol

Yeah, it's a 3.4L. Again, it's a double edged sword. I'd like to go up north with that crew and get some real rock crawling experience where the 4.88s would come in handy...but that's also a lot of interstate driving at 2700-2800 RPMs. Not really healthy for the engine, although I am about to have to drop a rebuilt one in it. I'm definitely not going any further away than Ocala with the current engine...at least not without trailering it.

2700-2800 isn't too bad. I turn about 2650 at 75. Thats currently in stock form. I think on 4.88 ill be around 2750 at 75.

What's your overdrive gear ratio? I know 2nd Gens run taller factory gears than 1st Gens.

Have you looked at this? You have to know which transmission you have, but I'm sure you do.

    https://www.marlincrawler.com/differential/ring-pinion#calcs

Edit: kinda like the numbers on that RA61F. If a 5VZ bellhousing would bolt to it and there was a properly splined clutch disc, plus an FJ t-case, I wouldn't mind running it with 4.88s. Nice low first gear, higher overdrive than my R150F.
