Sooooo, I noticed a funky hum the other day on my way home from Ft Pierce. I can't really hear it until I get over 55 and it's a different pitch than the rumble of the dirty-fives. Seems like my driver side front wheel bearing is going bye-bye. Looks like I'll be putting in an order with @BamaToy1997 in the very near future.

 

I already have. I'm running radials on Natty, being as she's a pavement princess and all.

 

Lol. Radials hang with bias tires just fine. Tread pattern and tire construction aren't big factors imo for all-around off road performance

Actually, I don't have to. Just look at what all the rock bouncers are running. If it's not an Interco tire, it's an agg tire (which still might be an Interco tire since they make agg tires too). There's a reason you don't see them running radials or even other bias ply tires.

It was a good read, however the only thing I can comment on is that is appears that the article is 13 years old. I believe the technology of tire manufacturing has changed.

 

Doesn't make it any less relevant. Sure, some radials are now using a layer or two of kevlar instead of polyester but the design is pretty much the same. I would posit that if any manufacturing technology has advanced, the advances could be used on bias ply tires as well. the cost thing is definitely a lot closer than it used to be, or even reversed, in the case of the Trepadors. They come in both radials and bias plies and the bias plies are hideously expensive compared to the radials.

 

It comes down to what you are using the truck for is it offroad only or used for both on and off road. The reason why a lot of the buggies and rock crawlers use bias tires is because they are easier to make in a tire size of 42" or bigger. I dont think a bias out performs a radial. I just feel that is less acceptable sidewall damage at a low PSI.

But to say "look at what the rock bouncers are running" isn't really saying much. I could say look at what the KOH/Ultra4 guys are running which is probably 98% your typical "mud" tire, both radials and bias, and only difference is that they are probably a sticky (which on rocks, is the real bread and butter choice).

But from personal and first hand experience from the terrain that I have wheeled, there is no noticeable difference in any of the tires I have ran. Hell, frank ran all of the stuff I did at Black mountain (minus the rock garden) on a bald set of Toyo m/t's and I don't recall him even getting stuck in mud.

 

You're talking traction. All I'm saying here is that a bias ply tire will take more abuse than a radial. I'm not really addressing traction. Swampers come in radials too. In fact, there's a set of Interco radials on the OGT right now and, given how soft they are, they probably count as "Stickies".
