So speaking of guns. Anyone have a hand guard they want to sell ? Mine doesn’t have rails on it so no attachment points

 

If your looking at a hog gun I would go with a 300 AAc for close range pretty much equivalent to a 30-30 Its proven you can great ballistics with a short barrel up to 300 yards. If want something closer to a 30 in a ar platform without the price tag look into 6.5 grendel 16" barrel.This is my .02 cents Im sure others will disagree.

 

He could get a .458 SOCOM upper for his AR 15 lower. Pretty sure that would drop a hog fairly quickly. If my old man wasn't using his shot gun with slugs and 00 buck hunting hog, he was hunting them with a .45-70 Gov't. It'd make that the cost of that AR hurt less. You know I've been drinking the 6.5 caliber Koolaid since ought-3, but I'm thinking a bigger bullet with more energy for a hog. Although I have seen a few pictures suggesting that 6.5 Creedmoor will end them pretty efficiently. .458 SOCOM might as well have been invented to take down hogs instead of hostiles behind .250" steel armor.

Geez, that's the second time in 2 weeks I've suggested .458 SOCOM. You'd almost think I wanted one myself, but those days are long behind me. I'm sure the Creedmoor is going to beat me up quite sufficiently on it's own and if not, the AR-12 can pick up the slack.

Having said that, Todd, if you get a .458 SOCOM, I definitely want to "test" fire it a few times, just so I can say I shot one. Any of mine you want to try out, you're welcome anytime. Which reminds me, I need to go buy a box of factory Creedmoor ammo.

Care to elaborate? I honestly have no experience with it other than what I've seen on TV. How about the alternative, the .450 Bushmaster, which I know even less about. I just like calibers the start with .4 (or at minimum have a 4 in them -- 6.5 = .264), lol. Like, I'd like to see a .416 in a Remington Ultra Mag or a necked up .338 Lapua Mag case. The .416 Barrett is just over the top. I would love to shoot any of those once or twice. The pain would be worth the novelty, but I wouldn't waste my money buying (or making) one. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of bullet options for .416. .416 Rigsby is not even in Sierra's current hand loading manual. Neither is .416 Barrett for that matter.

 

The last time I checked the .458 wasn’t manufactured to a saami spec.This was a result in the same caliber manufactured by different people resulting improper cycling. If If I was going to go big prob go with the 50 beowulf. This is if I was staying in the AR 15 platform.

 

.308 only for me (I like to have matching rounds, and my bolt action is a .308). All these more exotic rounds just don't do anything for me. The only other round I'd maybe consider is a 7.62x39, as I have a ton of ammo in that size for my SKS. But I'm probably not going to do that no matter what lol

 

Ok but it has some advantages over the 308.

 

Damn, Todd is more old skool than I am. .308 is only just a little bit less old skool than 30-06, which my old man was also a fan of. It was odd because he loved his M-14 in the Corps, he didn't have much interest in .308 otherwise. Even though we are estranged, I know he has an M1A now. Maybe that's the route you should go, Todd; get an M1A. I'm guessing there's probably loads of upgrades for then since people still use them in competition, including 1000yrd competitions.

The 300 blackout?

 

The 6.5 grendel has some advantages over the .308

 

L2R: .223 Rem, 6.5 BR, 6.5 Creedmoor.

I ended up buying a cheap-ass box of Federal American Eagle 120gr. I almost fell for the trap of buying the $40+ dollar box of Sig Sauer 130gr hunting rounds because I'm homing the Sierra 130gr TMK is going to be my go-to bullet and there was some Sig match grade stuff there but it was all 140 gr and I didn't want to punish myself that much zeroing my scope. Says it produces 2900 FPS MV, but not what length barrel they used to determine that. I'm guessing 24". I bet out of my rifle it'll be pretty close to 3000 FPS.

 

Oh I'm sure it does. I haven't researched any of these exotic rounds much, I just like the simplicity and availability of .308 (when I'm up in the middle of nowhere in the panhandle and the only options are literal hardware store and mom and pop shops). Carrying one type of ammo that works for more than one gun is just something I've always liked

 

I can tell you velocity isn't one of them (thus neither is energy). The Grendel has about the same performance profile as my 6.5 BR did. They are basically the same dimensionally, although the Grendel is more tapered and thus has slightly less case capacity. The Grendel is just based on a shortened .220 Russian parent case, while the 6.5 BR was based on a shortened .308 case.

Continuity in ammo is a good thing. That's why at one time I had three pistols that all shot .40 cal. Now I have 2 that shoot .40 cal and one little S&W .38 spl snubby. Well, that an my .22LR target pistol.

And I politely question your knowledge of a wildcat round they don't even make loading dies for, which I happened to have personal experience with.

The heaviest bullet Sierra lists data for the Grendel on is the 130gr (even my 6.5 BR went up to 142gr bullets for the load data). The hottest load they list for that bullet is 2400 fps / 1662 f/lb of energy at the muzzle. For the .308, the 220 gr is the bullet with the hottest load at 2400 fps, but the energy is 2813 f/lbs and it will carry that energy longer and will be less likely to be deflected by twigs and leaves. The only advantage I see with the Grendel is a lower recoil.

It's funny, before we had this debate, I was thinking at some point I might get a 6.5 Grendel upper for my AR, but after seeing the data compared to my 6.5 BR, I think I'll have to give it a hard pass. If any thing I might want an AR 10 chambered for 6.5 Creedmoor. Rock River has one chambered for .338 Lapua Mag that makes me drool, but my shoulder would never forgive me.
