Yes unlike the days of yore the voltage regulator is built into the alternator. Back in my younger days the voltage regulator was a separate component.

Thanks for updating this thread OP, I wish more TW members would do the same when making a thread. :hattip:

I may be having the same problem, would there be any way of rebuilding the OEM alternator by buying a replacement voltage regulator? OEM alternators are so expensive that if replacing parts is possible it would save a lot of money. I say this after watching "Timmy the Toolman" replace the bushings in a failing alternator on his YouTube Channel and looked very simple.

Usually unless you have a connection for the parts you will find that they are too expensive or hard to get.

That was a route I wanted to take, but they aren't separate, and the parts aren't readily available to a carport mechanic like me. Just another way for us to spend more money in the name of simplicity.

The Denso I bought is going strong still with close to 15k on it. Rockauto.com has them for ~$130 plus a $70 core charge, not too bad for a quality non-OEM replacement.

I put a "new" (reman) alternator in the other night. No change. I think these autozone alternator's are garbage. I know this is my issues because if i unplug the alternator while the truck is running, it runs very smooth with no idle fluctuating at all.

I did the prior. I took the whole thing off and cleaned it very thoroughly. I have cleaned the MAF, replaced the PCV, new (reman) alternator as mentioned, seafoam treatment, ive checked for a bad ground, ive checked for vacuum leaks. nothing. the only thing that makes a difference with the idle is unplugging the alternator. unplug it and it runs like its brand new.

Crappy remanufactured alternators really suck. Most of these places remanufactured = dusted off cleaned and placed back in a box to resell.
