The plugs were something like $30.00 including shipping. Shipping was steep making the whole purchase feel like I got little carried away with this whole thing.

In terms of a light oil to penetrate the frame, that sounds logical and will work well between layers of welded frame but it's only going to last a short time before evaporating and/or washing off under wet driving conditions. A light oil is not something that is going to protect through a winter in northern New England. That's why undercoating materials are thick.

Bar and chain oil won't penetrate and wick into knooks and crannies? I have to disagree because I can't imagine any reason why it would not. It might be bar and chain but it is also still oil.

If my truck were new I'd use an undercoating material that would have a more waxy, dry surface. My truck is an 06 from MA with 100k on the odometer. It has little surface frame rust but it does have some and I'm sure it has some between layers of welded frame. I'm apprehensive toward using an undercoating material because it won't penetrate between the layers of frame as fully as bar and chain oil.

Yes, oil makes a mess and it does build up with road dirt but, this is something that I can pressure wash off whenever I want and will protect the frame over the winter. If I decide to pressure wash, I'll still keep the oil protection that has wicked between layers of steel. I didn't oil spray the leaf springs and they are the only moving part that I can think of that might have an issue with dirt attraction. I did spray the rear end and as many brackets and other surfaces that were showing signs of surface rust. So far the rear end itself hasn't accumilated much of anything in terms of dirt.

Paint, no matter how well the frame is prepped, will do nothing to stop the rust that is already occuring between the welded layers of steel and the damage will continue. This isn't a solution for me in Vermont with wet road salt being sprayed over everything under the truck and into the cracks between layers of frame material. I've greesed chrome wheels in fall and seen them turn black through the winter with road grime, only to clean them in the spring to find that they were in better shape with less surface rust than the fall before. While it may not be pretty, it works and is easily removable.

That's good information. I've never heard the 10c. double rate of oxidation before.

It looks like Por15 and the Eastwood products have mixed reviews. They have few reviews too. If they work, great but not everyone says they do. Fluid film looks like it has a solid non-biased/third party group of multiple reviewers who give it good ratings. It can also flow between layers of steel.

I haven't had much luck with rust neutralizers and won't trust them till auto body shops are using them instead of sandblasting. Even with sandblasting, auto body shops prefer new replacement parts.

Any drawbacks to spraying silicone on the frame/suspension?

Silicone will not harm rubber items like dust boots and bushings.

Doesn't last long at all. It would wash off within a couple of days driving in the wet.

    Doesn't hurt o-ring or x-ring motorcycle chains.

How is it that motor oil will eat rubber but chain and bar oil , which is essentially motor oil won't ?

That's been bugging me all day

The chain oil that I used on my motorcycles is clear and pretty thick. Almost a Vaseline consistency, but much stickier. It's really more of a grease than an oil.

    That's what I figured

So , yeah. , pretty sure bar and chain oil is going to have the same effect on rubber as motor oil

    Anybody dispute that ?

I'm sure it works fine as a lubricant for chainsaw bars , not sure how it would work for frame coating besides attaracting the local rodent community

Ding, that frame looks as good as mine.
That's great for living where you do.

Says a lot for Fluid Film.
The dust wouldn't bother me a bit.
