I just hit 100k on my 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport (DCLB), purchased it new. I have been following the Maintenance Guide that came with the truck and it has never advised to change or flush the transmission fluid except under special operating conditions.

Mostly highway miles on the truck. I towed a camper for less than 1,000 total miles a few years back and then I recently put a roof top tent on it at 80k miles and only taken off-road to camp. The tent is only on during camping trips, and off for daily driving.

My question is "What should I do at this point?"
It seems some people flush at 60k miles which is recommended under special operating conditions. Some people drain and fill at 100k. Some people never service the transmission unless there is a leak.

I am a bit disappointed that I didn't think of this until now. If the maintenance guide recommended the service under normal operating conditions, I would have performed the service.

Any help or advice is much appreciated as I plan on keeping this truck for a long time. :help:
    Thank you in advance,
    Vince

I personally would do it myself and that would lead you towards a drain and refill. I believe a flush implies a piece of equipment is required. I’d drain, refill, cycle through the gears and repeat. I would cycle through 16 quarts to effectively get almost all of the old stuff out. Not a difficult job and is satisfying that you not only saved money you know it is done correctly.

Thank you. I came across a couple write-ups on the process and it seems pretty basic. I purchased the extended warranty with pre-paid maintenance up to 50k miles. After that, I've been changing the oil, filters, spark plugs, etc myself... the transmission fluid service seems easy enough for me to do. I just never thought into it until now at 100k miles. In the write ups I've seen, I don't think they mentioned "cycling through the gears." How would I do that? Physically driving it and then drain and fill, repeat? And thank you for the response.

After I hit 45k miles, I did/do an annual drain and fill. The next question is with what. I use Valvoline MaxLife.

no need to drive it to cycle the gears. The video does a good job explaining everything. Note, the jump wire to get fluid temperature doesn’t work with late model years.

Never, ever, ever flush a transmission. Drain and fill always.
