    Hi Tacoma World,

I've been reading some forums about this "Taco Tick" that seems to be normal for tacomas. I think that what I have is something different. It's not that I'm concerned, it's just really annoying. When I am accelerating above 2k rpm in any gear or above 2k rpm in neutral, I can hear this flutter noise. It's almost like someone is flicking the corner of a sheet of paper really really fast. Sometimes it is really loud and other times it's not so loud, so.. I have no idea what it is. I'm going to upload a video, the only way to hear it is if you turn the volume way up and listen really closely because the video doesn't capture it very well. Try to tune out the exhaust sound. Thx in advance for any advice.

Also, I couldn't hear it through my computer speakers but I can through headphones. Or even my phone speaker turned all the way up and my ear close to the speaker. Thx again.

Its spark knock, I had it on my 2013. They have a TSB for it to be fixed at the dealer for free.

I have a similar noise... driving me crazy too. Mine sounds more like a plastic rattling noise / vibration. Same RPM though. Doesn't sound like spark knock to me.

That’s the spark knock issue TSB. To me it sounds like old school engine pinging which was in my first hand me down car, which was an 83 Bonneville which always pinged (that’s from before the 10% ethanol craze and winter mix crap btw)....only the Tacoma pings at 2k rpm while under + graded loads or while carrying a bed load.

Toyota fixed it (supposedly) only for the 2012-2015 folks. Us 2011 back to 2005 guys though, the problem remains unadressed by Mr. Mike Sweers’ truck team. Thanks Mike!

The only alternate fix is to find a different, better fuel supplier of 87 octane, or otherwise occasionally buy 93 octane fuel. I typically avoid convienence store type gas stations like Sheetz, Quick Check and Wawa, and the 2nd hand gas stations (Delta in NJ) which buy gas from other stations then add water. 87 octane Raceway fuel works great for me. Shell and Exon usually promoted pinging for me.

    Thanks!
I'll run some high octane and see if that helps...wonder if octane boost in an already full tank would help?

Quick update: I took my truck to the dealer and he said that the spark knock would be covered under warranty. So, he said he flashed the ECM and that should fix it. It’s still there so that didn’t work

Since I visited the dealer to ask about the spark knock issue and have it fixed, my a/c only works if I turn it to max, and sometimes my engine will randomly rev up while idling... ?
Why would my a/c only come on on max and not anywhere in between? What causes my engine to randomly rev? Why is the tick/ping/flutter still there?? I don't know what to do.

Not sure about the A/C, and the flutter sounds "normal" at least that seems to be the general consensus. The idle issue might be a throttle position sensor. My 93 4Runner did the same thing.
