Just get the widest beam possible so you can run shallow. Remember that depending on what materials you plan to build out your casting platform/polling platform etc. with, you're gonna be adding weight. Weight equals draft and draft equals getting hung up. Strong, lightweight and shallow are basically the reasons that saltwater flats boats are so damn expensive.

Trust me I know. I looked up a similar one for trout (not a drift boat) close to 8g for the boat alone no motor. Thanks for the help i'll make sure to follow that with my decision.

No joke! They want ungodly $$$$ for anything that floats and is designed for fly fishing.

Ridiculous amount of money. I have the orvis clearwater II 5wt 17 years old and a 7wt same rod. Still works fine.

In no way am I spending 8g on a fly boat that I get to take out maybe two dozen times a year. This is the cheaper alternative aka fabricating my own from a baseline of a jon boat.

I'm in NJ we have have some good fishing here most of it is north and north west. A lot of people take the easy route and fish the spots next to road. I hike into spots most people don't even think about goin. Small streams with native brookies are a lot of fun and the tenkara rod is great for accessing small pocket water with out spooking the fish. I also fly fish the bigger rivers. PA, and upstare NY are good. If you get a chance head up to Roscoe NY to fish the upper Delaware and the creeks that feed it.

Aluminum would be my choice it's tuff and light. Build your platform up front. Use marine grade plywood and seal it real well. Rug and seat is optional. Mount a trolling motor up front with a foot pedal. Get the widest boat you can get and still access the spots you want to fish. Not sure what type of water your going to fish but an out board and gas can adds a good bit of weight. I would look for a used boat and motor to save some cash.
I like the canoe myself I used a Coleman scanoe for years I think was 17 ft long and 42" wide it was stable enuf to stand up and cast in. I only used a 42lb thrust trolling motor it ran all day and it was pretty quick. If I went to a small stream or pond I could paddle it with no problems. I could also load it on the truck by myself.

Hittin' some bigger rivers this weekend, so I made up a few dedicated Streamer leaders for use with my 6WT 25' shooting head fast sink tip line. For this application, I keep them really short at 4'. 2' of 15 lb Maxima and 2' of 10 lb Maxima. Perfection loop on one end for quick connect. Triple Surgeons knot to connect the two. Quick & Easy!

Interesting. What spicies are you targeting? I would think a fish which needs 15 lbs tippet would break perfect loop knot, no?

Oh, probably I have mis-read it at first. You are just tying a conic leader, makes sense now.

Correct - just tying up some leaders.

Targeting Big Brook Trout & Landlocked Salmon. Leader size is more for the big flies & punishment of the leader I'm casting versus the size of the fish I'm catching.

This would be my fishing buddy except she hasn't sat still since I picked her up at 8 weeks old. She's 5 years old now.

Thanks, Sig. I was a Chesapeake guy for years. I still will always have one, but my new love are GSP's. She's amazing.
