Get on CL, look for any cheap used fly rig. Start casting in your back yard, truck bay or any open space.

I learned to fly cast from reading field and stream. You can watch vids now. Get to it!

It makes using a rod/reel not exciting. Also pisses the rod/reel fishermen off when they aren't catching anything and you walk up and start pulling them out. Lol

    That fly will work wonders.

Did You buy hackles at the height of the price inflation years ago?

I was given 99% of my tying tools/stuff from a friend that passed several years ago.

Two years ago, i was fishing with my boss, and killing them. Bait guy walks but bitching that there weren't any fish in this creek. I commented there were, and pulled 4-5 out with him standing there. He shook his head and walked away. Surprised he didn't cast in the hole with us.

Me and a buddy went this morning. Mine came up and sipped a chubby off the top, his took one of the squirmy worms I tied up (it's been raining like every day for a week)

Must have. I haven't needed any in years. I went to the fly fishing conclave and loaded up on some the next year also. When I bought my tying setup I walked out of the store with around $600 in the bag.

Just when I thought I was going to get into tying haha. I've been seriously contemplating getting a vice but I don't know if I should bet a decent one or cheaper one since i'm not sure I will like it over buying all my flies or be able to use it very often. Looking at a Renzetti Traveler or Danvise, if you have opinions.

I thought about tieing, but I seem to collect so many flies from trees, I don't feel the need.

I have an old salmon snagging rig. Its just a #2 treble hook that has been dipped in a lead sinker mold. It has some thin nylon rope attached. I cut off the barbs and I use it as a mini grappling hook. I see a fly in the trees, I toss this rig up there and pull down the branch with the bug(s) on it.

Buy the best you can afford but don't go overboard. You can tie the same on a cheaper vise as you can on a outrageous priced one. Not bottom of the barrel but not top notch either.

I find a lot of flies in trees too. That seems like a good thing to have when trying to retrieve your own flies, I might take your idea haha.
I have heard the same from many others, what do you tie on if you don't mind sharing?

Thankfully I have some experience with expensive pastimes.

I still have about eight grand in proprietary Porsche car tools and I haven't had a Porsche car in over ten years.

I have an acre and a half pond on my property stocked with blue gill, you reckon that would be a good place to start?

Hoping that is what makes the difference for me. Used to bait cast when I was younger but I was also drinking back then too, quit drinking and lost interest in fishing as I mostly just caught a buzz. Now bait casting just seems enormously boring.

    Thanks all for the welcome.

The pond would be a great place to start. 'Gills caught with poppers and a fly rod are amazing fun!

I learned how to fly fish by going after bluegill and bass on the lake around my house. Like Kirk said, they love little poppers, hoppers, and ant patterns. I believe beginner outfits were just discussed the other day as well if you want to read a couple pages back.

Mentioned fly fishing to a buddy in a phone call just now and he said that he has one of these that he will give me for a hundred bucks. Worth it?

Said he bought a Tough Baston (spelling?) and will never go back.

If you don't buy it, I will!

I'm a big fan of pack rods. Some don't like multi-piece rods, but they work for me very well.

I have a clearwater which is the next rod up and it has served me well. Some guys here were saying the encounter was also a good rod for the money the other day. What kind of fish will you be targeting though? That rod that comes in the combo is a 7ft 5wt. That seems like a good inexpensive way to see if you will enjoy fly fishing, but you will probably be looking for a longer rod if you decide to take up the hobby.
