Anyone still getting out much the past few weeks?

I've only been out twice in the past 3 weeks as work has been busy and river conditions have been fluctuating like crazy. Had a couple trips to a local flow which didn't result in catching the target species (coho) but still had fun with my wife catching chum, sockeye and even hooked a couple monster chinook that I couldn't stop. Just a few shots from the recent trips. I hope to get out once or twice before winter is here and I shift to Steelhead and tying.

    Looking for some advice.

I have a Sage One 8 weight, and for a fast action rod, man its fast. It's my first sage/ and i have always fished TFO BVK's.

From my experience, it seems the Sage does not have much room for error when casting, especially on the 50-60 ft range.

Casting it in the parking lot, it felt great on the shorter stuff, but now that I have used it a handful of times, i am discovering the true character of this rod.

While I have only had the rod for a few months, i still want to give it a shot before i move onto something else.

Would overlining help with the timing and slow down the action a little bit?

    What are yalls thoughts?

@baileybrandon I have a Sage One 5100 and it is a fairly fast rod. That being said, I have fished a number of other rods that are much faster and when I go back to this one it doesn't feel as fast. Definitely not a moderate speed rod though!

I would ask what line you are using at this time? Floating, sinking, sink tip? Next question I have is how far do you need to cast the rod where you fish? Casting accurate is generally better than casting for huge distance (talking about river/lake fishing). Final question is how long of leaders do you use?

Over lining the rod could be a solution. I use the Rio Grand on most of my faster rods because it is a 1/2 size up without going to a full size over. I've done this with my Sage One and have been happy with the way it casts.

    Rip Gold floating line.

My distances vary. I fish tail waters most often and the depths and widths change depending on generation and whether I am wading of floating.

I use anywhere from 7-9ft leader.. and sometimes shorter for bigger flies
Most 1-4x for big poppers and streamers. Sometimes sinking leaders as well.

I have had this line for about a year and could probably use a new one so maybe I’ll try the Rio hrand next go around?

@baileybrandon I use both Grand and Gold and I find both have their place. I tend to use the Gold on my moderate action rods and the Grand on my faster rods. Do you have someone near you that has the Grand line that you can try? Or maybe a local fly shop that can let you try it on your rod and cast it in a field first?

I originally had the Rio Indicator line on my Sage One and hated it. I was almost ready to get rid of the rod then I changed the line and I have been happy with it. Could also just be a rod that doesn't work with your casting style/timing. I have bought a few rods that just didn't work for me and sold them shortly after.

As for the leader, 7-9' sounds about right. Sometimes with a leader that is too short, and quite often with long leaders, it becomes very difficult to turn the fly over and it doesn't cast well at distance.

Also check out the Rio Grand Perception (which I have on one of my rods). It is a full line size up, where the regular Grand is only a .5 size up.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

I’ve got a sage on my expensive 5wt setup and really like it. Now I just have to buy another rod to put this one on...

Ha that's my 5 wt set up too! Orvis Clear water III and a Sage 2230 Reel with Rio backing and 5wt float. Perfect balance.

May do a similar set up on a 8wt soon for bass and light salt water activities :D

The same shit everyone else has.
If you're a fly fisherman, you have to be a lil nuts.

Do a guided partial day trip where they rent out the whole outfit? See if it's your thing.
