Don't abuse me, but I don't tie. Too much other crap going on. But, I do save my pheasant tails for friends. Should I have been salting them?

I just don't want funk on them so i try to dry them out as quick as possible.. I could see opening a big bag of them a couple weeks later and them crawling with maggots.

For those interested - here's my skin preservation process.
    1. I mostly do ruffed grouse & ducks.
    2. Skin bird, duck, rabbit, etc. I'm no pro, but I slit the skins along the back to keep all the breast feathers fully intact.
    3. Wash off any blood and pat dry
    4. Freeze or put on ice until I get home.
    5. Once home, right into the freezer
    6. I use two shallow storage totes to dry 4 skins at a time (remove & thaw 4 from the freezer).
    7. Place skins in tote skin side up & cover generously with Borax & let sit for 2 weeks. I'll spread some into the feathers just in case there's any moisture.
    8. Maybe overkill - but I discard the Borax and repeat #6 again.
    9. Remove skins & gently shake over a trash can - that Borax will go everywhere.
    10. Voila

The same shit everyone else has.
Thats how I do my deer hair and squirrel skins basically.

For step 2, I wash everything really well in laundry soap then soak it for a day or 2 to kill the bugs.

Then everything else is the same.

I like to staple what ever Im working on to a piece of plywood so it dries flat.

    Reserected from the dead.
I cheat when it comes to the DH cast. I let the streamer hit the water on my back cast. When I forward pull the line This loads the rod and enables me to punch the streamer longer distances or fight a head wind.

Sounds like a variation of a water haul cast. And basically how I chuck heavy stuff on my 7'6" 3w.

Throwing a #8 slumpbuster on that rod is UGLY.

It's my first GSP, and she's a hoot. Always have had Chesapeakes. Have one now, also. Will always have one. But will also stick with GSPs. Don't duck hunt anymore, but still love the retriever. Great guard dog. And will hunt pheasant, just not great at it.

Was able to get in a stream in Ellijay Ga for a bit last week. Not a lot of action, but a few rainbows. And the taco got some snow on it today!

I may or may not have just bought a new Hardy Shadow 9' 5wt (4 piece) on eBay for less than half of retail.
