There are no standards as to what defines "Fast", "Medium/Fast", "Medium", etc.

Gotta get to a fly shop and cast them to really get a feel of how they'll perform with your individual casting style.

Buying fly rods has become like buying golf clubs (I don't golf, but you know what I mean). :frusty:

This is my 13 year old nephew. First time out at the casting ponds, with about 10 minutes of instruction from me. Just like that and he’s better than I am. Though that’s not saying much. Those who can, do. Those that can’t, teach.

That’s pretty good for his first time. Have him work on keeping his wrist from bending next time. I guess I’m in the same boat as you, teaching wise.

Told him about the wrist a couple times. Had him put his thumb on the grip, and rest his wrist/forearm on the butt. Still, not bad for ten minutes.

Same. Patiently waiting for May to go chase some kings. But probably with a spinning reel and/or bait caster... :crapstorm:

we had a nice melt off and it looked like spring was coming...then we got blasted with 6" of snow last night...so winter is still here. Water is still really cold and fish are lethargic.

I went one time a few weeks back, hooked one large brown, didn’t land it.

Would like to go this weekend, but got the kids bday party.

    Reserected from the dead.
Just got back from an afternoon on the Au Sable river. I knew it was early for steelies, but couldn't pass up the 40 plus degrees with sun.

NoG to watch the native loons having a ball. No fish or even a strike, but it was just awesome being out.

In other news, does anyone run a gear lanyard? I never have, but might try one out.

My niece, who is a paracord freak wanted to know if a lanyard would be a good gift for her father. Her dad just retried from the police force and wants to learn to fly fish.

    Sorry about the long post.Screenshot_20180214-204351.jpg

A few pics from my Hot Creek, Upper, Middle and Lower Owens River getaway. Great weather and fun fishing in Hot Creek but catching was pretty slow on The Upper to Lower Owens. They were there but not liking what and how I was throwing. We only managed a few in some of the deeper runs but this placed gets fished a lot and the pressure from the weekend crowds had the fish hunkering down.

^^^Watching someone fish the middle section of Hot Creek. Wading is discouraged here as the creek bed is fragile and there is really no need to get in the water other than to un-snag a rig or to aid in the landing of a fish if necessary. The creek is shallow and not so wide that it can't be fished from the main trail side.

^^The fairly dry Winter and last years dry Summer and Fall hasn't help the grasslands around the river green up.

^^a few small patches of snow left from the last bit of storm. I'm sure this has all melted with the last few days of warmer weather.
^^ The Upper Owens water level was a little high and fast on this visit but the flow has slowed and dropped in the last week so the conditions may be better this week.
^^ There were quite a few decent ones holding near the bridge that's just below the last parking turn-out for the main Hot Creek section. The road that crosses the bridge leads to the old Alpers Trout Hatchery.(http://discovermammoth.com/fishing/alpers-trout-eastern-sierra.html
    [IMG]
^^ My son and his dog didn't mind the slow action on the Owens near 5 Mile Bridge.

I’ve been a few times. Was off yesterday and was going to go, but it’s been raining every day for about a week and every creek/river is chocolate milk. I might try to go Sunday morning if it doesn’t pour between now and then.
