It took me a while, spending money on what I thought was a better rod because it cost more money. This is not always the case, in my opinion.

Slow is not a bad thing. I've found that slow rods are, to me, more forgiving when it comes to casting errors.

I don't seem to "snap the whip" with my slower, Cabela's rod. It seems that fly casting fishing is more relaxing when I'm not working so hard to perform a lazy back cast and then presentation.

I think "lazy" is a good description. If I can get into the routine of picking up the line, hauling back then shooting forward while smoking a cigar, and then presenting that fly exactly where I wanted it to go, then I am truly trout fishing.

Again, I could give a rip weather I catch fish. Im outside, away from the job and life's built in stresses.

Something magical occurs when you make the perfect cast without thinking about anything. You just can't help feeling pleased.

Heading to Charleston at the end of next month to do some redfishing for the first time. Should be fun. Don’t know if we’ll be doing any fly fishing or not, but maybe. I know the guy we’re going to meet has 1 fly rod suitable for reds, but it’ll be mostly gear

They may not feel like the faster powerful casting rods but they damn sure make it more fun for me at that speed too

    Link?

I can tie my own, but it’s hard making the time to do so these days. I’d rather fish than sit and tie. Cabelas has had some good deals as well on bulk flies in the past where I’ve been able to stock up on patterns I use regularly, and at a cost cheaper than I could tie them for myself.

I just got them in yesterday, can't wait to try casting them after wiggling them around in the living room. The action feels unreal, any movement and you feel the flex all the way into the butt of the rod and your palm. I've only fished bamboo and graphite before this, interested to see how they cast.

20140503_164542.jpg For the guy looking to get his boy into flyfishing... I have two girls that I have flyrods for. A buddy picked them up while fishing in alaska and his dad put their names on the rods for us. Not sure what make they are but they are not super high end rods, just a kit. I dont think it matters what the rod is, the thing that sold the kids on flyfishing was catching lots of small bass and minnows. Its too easy as an adult to look at the big picture and not be able to focus down like a child. Lots of little fish is just as much fishing as throwing drys for specs in a pristine lake. The appreciation for that will come with age. Unless of course you have a pristine lake where he can throw drys and catch LOTS of specs! In that case be careful because you will have a fishing addict on your hands!

A pond stocked with bluegills, etc. is also a good starter.......may get a hit every cast, no matter what pattern!!!! When my son and daughter were little 3-5, I used to take them to a buddy's stocked pond - tons of blue gills and a NICE bass. Took Cole and a buddy one time - had to ask them to take a break so I could drink a beer!!!! EVERY cast had a 'gill on it. Either I was releasing a fish or re-baiting a hook. Too little for fly fishing at that time. Neither of my kids really got into fishing and never tried a fly rod, but I never pushed them, either. Maybe someday, maybe not. Just like hunting, I won't push either of them into it.

Tim - GREAT pic of the little one and her catch!!!! What a smile!!!

I had prob one of the best encounters fishing with a flyrod...cast a fly out got a nice bite, bass jumped out of the water like a picture perfect art painting of bass jumping...got the bass to shore...and it was maybe 7" long:rofl:If I had a video of it it would have been epic....

    Thanks.

I just want to get him active with it since he is showing interest. I hope he gets addicted to fishing.

We don’t many ponds around us that are that full of fish. I’m a memeber of a private club with a large lake. We’ve had 100 fish days with worms under a bobber.

Last year the topwater Striper season was insane on our lake... We had fish schooling from Oct - March! This year was tough - Oct and Nov were great and then died... Cold dec and jan and now a rainy Feb caused the lake to come up 7 ft in a week and blew out the northend.

However, we’ve been in the 70s the past 2 weeks and the fish are responding well. Got 2 stripers last Saturday and went 3 for 5 on stripers and landed 6 bass on Monday... Perfect timing too as we are holding a fly fishing only Striper tournament this Saturday, with all proceeds going to Project Healing Waters!

Hope my luck continues through this weekend... There is about $2500 worth of gear to the 1st place team!
