    Yes,
I have a Orvis Helios 9ft. 9 wt. With a Battenkill Large Arbor reel. I use this combo for salt water ,Stripers & Blues. You can cast this thing all day & your arm will not fall off. Feels like a 6 or 7 wt. Lots of power to throw big streamers. Plenty of backbone to get those big boys in. Don't forget about the Orvis guarentee. Over the years Orvis has treated me very well whenever I had a problem. Worth the money !

Yeah I agree, I broke my clearwater last year, brought it back and replaced it no questions. Top notch customer service! I'm really leaning towards the helios. I think i'll go cast it at the shop in Manchester. I'm sure i'll like it anyway.

Thats what i'm looking for, is something to get those big streamers out there and was looking at the 9' 9wt.

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing. The website says disabled vets but the guy I talked to said any veteran of any branch that wants to join is highly encouraged and welcomed. I would just contact the local chapter and see how they do things. The one here in wyoming has a facebook page that they update with contests and meetings.

I've built two rods in my collection. It was a lot easier than I first thought as well. There isn't much you can do to really affect the rods performance. Just make sure your grip and reel seat are securely epoxied to the blank. Everything else is pretty much cosmetic.

My first was a Sage blank kit from FeatherCraft and it turned out really well. Second was a diamondback fiberglass 5 weight.

Nice thing about building rods, besides saving money, is you can choose your own components and really customize it how you like.

Highly recommend trying it sometime. You can find cheap blanks on eBay to play around with.

Awesome, glad to see so many people doing it! I want to build a 0 or 1 wt for the summer. Just trying to get cost of tools and such. I have the fly tying necessities so it looks to be a minimal purchase. I would love a sage blank but they are still a pretty penny. Ill probably go with a TFO blank

Awesome to hear man! I used a fly tying bobbin and a cardboard box to wrap the rod. Cut notches on each side of the box to rest the rod in and then poke a few holes in the front of the box to stick your bobbin through. Worked pretty well and didn't cost a thing.

Don't try to use fly tying thread... Get some good rod wrapping thread because it is much stronger. That and expoy are about the only things, other than the blank and compnents, that I had to buy.

And I bought a pre-made cork grip. You can build your own with cork rings glued together and then sanded to shape... But that was a little too involved for me. I think my grip was about $25 and pretty good quality cork too.

Love me some TFO too by the way!

Shoot me a pm if you have any questions once you get started...

Will do! It's gonna be a while before I get started. Ill probably research the hell out of it for the next month instead of doing homework, then get drunk one night and order everything I need. Then a week later be like "wtf, Why is UPS here...I didn't order anything".

Is there any money to be had in the hobby? Such as buying sage blanks, then selling them on CL or Fleabay for cheaper than sage? Not looking to make a profit when considering hours put into it but getting materials covered to get another blank and some goodies?

Would any of you gents in the west be interested in a Taco/Fly fishing trip? I don't have a big trip planned for the summer and I like to try and do a week-ish fishing trip once a summer. Last summer was MT down to WY/CO border.

    Nice haha

Man I wish I lived out there :pout:
    I'd go in a second!

I'm planning a ski, mt bike, fishing/kayak fishing, camping, hiking, off-roading trip across the country in a year or two. Taking like 3 weeks and just checking as much off the list as possible!! I'd like to meet up with TW guys along the way for local tips and tricks

I could be in. I've been planning on heading back up to Kemmerer to fish Hamm's Fork again this summer, I had a blast last year. I also have a buddy with a cabin in Island Park, ID that I've been meaning to make it up to for a while, maybe use his spot as a starting or ending point.
