I don't know how else to get started but here we go....

I have done every kind of fishing except fly fishing and I want to get into it. The question is what kind of gear would be considered adequate and not be crazy to get for a beginner. I want to keep my total starter cost under $200 if possible. Let me know what you think. I'm open to buying used gear if its out there.

I would probably get a Redington Kit and buy Curtis Creek Manifesto for a book

    Before you buy any gear,
Find a friend that can take you and show you a few things, and/or hire a guide for a trip.

Orvis has a fly fishing 101 course on the weekends that are free. I might do that.

Great idea. They will try to sell you gear at the end, and may offer discounts.

Orvis encounter rods are pretty good for a starter rod. Rod, reel, and line (9 ft 5 wt) runs about $160

it's ok. But i think there are better rods in this price range and that come with a warranty. I started with a Bass pro Dogwood Creek outfit when i was 16. Never really used it, and then got back into it 16 years later and went with an encounter. I honestly like the dogwood creek better. That being said, i've ended up with an orvis Recon and wish i started off with that.

Echo is a decent brand too. A little slower than my recon, but definitely worth having for the price it is.

Keep in mind, what is good for someone, is not a good fit for another type of fisherman. Depends on what you are fishing for, where, style, etc.

To me, Orvis is a great brand. They have local support here in Memphis so warranties/exchanges are so stinking easy to deal with.

Reddington, Echo, (Orvis clearwater, not the encounter from my personal experience/opinion), hell even the Fenwick Aeotos is a decent cheap stick (i bought the propaganda from yellowstone anglers).

Honestly if i new that i would have loved fly fishing so much to start, i would have never spent the money on a lower end rod (personal opinion). Now i have a steady progression of rods, and some that i will never use again. BUUTTTT, it is a great way to get my friends into the sport! I love my orvis recon

Cicadas are starting to show themselves here in SWPA. Too bad we got 5” of rain this past week. I’m really itching to fish em.

I’ve heard the real fun during the cicada emergence is to be had at your local carp lake/river lol. Topwater monsters

I like the idea of carp, but the lure of a 20” wild brown drives me more.

I whipped these up real quick.

Hoping to find some fishable water tomorrow. If not, I’ll be hitting the local lake in search of carp

For anyone who hasn't heard of the Rio Fly clips, I strongly recommend them for any sub-surface fly connections (excluding nymphing). These things are the cat's meow and make changing flies a breeze. And the clip allows motion in the same manner as the non slip loop knot. Just tied these on all of my sink tip & full sink lines. Obviously not good for dry flies.
