I have and do. I used to be a fly purist. When I lived back east I spent time on every well known trout stream. I moved out here and got turned onto the min-jig set-up. It constantly produces big fish and it's just as fun as a fly rod. All my rods get action each season and if I'm backpacking in, which I usually am, my 4 weight and my jig rod are in the tube.

I’ve fished Galvans on my big boy rods since I was in college. Bit the bullet today and replaced my old warrior with a shiny new Torque T10. It has little weights you can add to balance it with your Spey rod. Kind of a nice feature over the bigger Abels. Nothing else to do when your steelhead rivers are blown out… in JUNE.

Where does one start, if one were so inclined to do so?
I want to get into this hobby on a low level, occasional weekend type. Would a Tenkara rod be a good start?

You’re going to trigger a whole bunch of people in this thread with the T word

Get a cheap Redington starter kit. Work on roll casting and the basic overhead cast at a pond or something. Go to your local shop, ask about flies, buy some, and then go have fun. Hiring a guide is a great way to get into the game as well. Even if just once. Skip the fly shop lessons and buy a seat on the front of someone’s boat.

Rarely am I outfished with my tenkara. I'm not generally fishing large rivers either. I think it's a good place to start. Less focus on casting and more about learning fish.

Do you spin fish already or would this all be new to you?

I have experience spin fishing. Definitely not new to fishing, fly rod always seemed intimidating to me however for whatever reason.

It can seem that way but it's really not that hard. Get a rod and reel. Spend time casting. Then go out and hit the same spots you do with a spinning set-up. You'll blunder around a bit at first but everyone does. After a few times it'll just click. It's a fun way to fish.

Been doing it for years and still bumble around. It’s a lot like golf, a lifetime sport and absolutely maddening at times.

As for a set up, hard to go wrong with the Reddington Path kit. Can be found for ~150. I have one and I use it more than my expensive rods and reels.

Cut & broke off stuff. Prolific ziptie and tape usage.
It's just different is all. Not bad. Seems a lot of shops do free or cheap classes too.
Just don't give up on it too soon if it seems like you can't get it right away. It'll eventually click if not right away.

Do you have an Orvis location near you? They offer a free introduction class that’s actually really good. I went a few years ago only to get a 20 percent off coupon at the end of class and the guys were all cool. I wasn’t new to fly fishing by any means but they knew that immediately and got me doing much more technical casting in class for fun. It was a blast and always something to learn so time well spent. They have you using the rod in class to cast so that’s awesome.

A few, mainly added skids. I like leaving the suspension alone. I drive forest service dirt roafs in the desert west extremely extremely too fast. Toyota nailed this suspension going 65 across desert terrain. Changing it is dumb unless you have a specific need like crawling or mud.
I just ran up too Bozeman Mt from Colorado for a bachelor party. Bachelor party's, done fly fishing style.

Water in Wyoming and Montana is still blown out.

Quality bachelor party plan. I was out there a few years ago around this time and it was blown out then too. Had some luck on nymphs but it was tough fishing
