I tie a majority of the flies I fish but has anyone ordered any flies from Rainys bargain basement? Until a couple days ago I new nothing about it. This time around they have mainly poppers and bigger saltwater flies. But the prices are crazy cheap compared to buying retail. If you're in need of any bass poppers, saltwater flies or steelhead flies it worth checking out.

That looks like a pretty good deal! I may need to get some bass stuff for next year.

Here is my 1st order of Rainys bargain basement flies. Some of them were bigger than I expected but I'm more than happy for the $150 I spent for all of these.

Try Big Y Fly Co. They’re incredibly cheap but their flies are pretty decent. I always thought all of their flies were tied overseas until I went to their shop (Hood River, OR) and saw the mass production they run — I guess some of them are made in OR. Very reasonable if you need flies in a hurry.

The are all normal Rainys flies. Some of them are over runs, discontinued patters, or colors and some are blems. From what I can tell the blems are just blemishes in the paint on the popper bodies. If you have much insight into the fly industry you should know Rainys is a premium priced good quality factory fly.

that tells me nothing about the hooks…
which is the most important part of the fly. I have fly fished all over the US (caught almost every US species, except maybe a few oddballs like a tiger trout, or tiger muskie,…etc.) as well as South America. I have tied all my own flies both fresh and saltwater. My experience tells me that good hooks are more often than not the deciding factor of the fish will make it to the net.

I have never heard of Rainys even after working at 2 different fishing stores in the past and being part of highly experienced fly fishing groups…so they can’t be that popular

If you like them and they work, that’s all that matters. I was just wondering if the type of hooks was known

Rainy’s is legit, with several flagship (named) fly patterns and a solid reputation of creating foam solutions. I think they initially made their name with warmwater patterns.
Not a bargain fly producer, so hopefully their hooks reflect their overall quality and image :)

good to know. This is good if I need to grab some patterns before a trip. The ties looked nice and consistent. Appreciate the response truchador.

Rainey’s is a big name in materials. You never heard of them? That’s unusual

Yep. Their site has only been up since 2016 (relatively young) and I have never purchased anything from them. I use to fish steelhead exclusively spey so I bought local in Oregon. Now I have materials till the day I die (pass on to my kid) and haven’t needed to buy materials for a long time

My son is in Michigan for work (3 days). He and his boss and a third guy went to Cabela's in Grand Rapids after work yesterday. He called me from the fly fishing dept. and asked about the cost of my stuff. We texted back and forth on this and I decided to sell him my secretary desk/chair and give him all my tying stuff for free. He is looking for a new hobby and likes to fly fish - gave him my backup rod/reel/vest 2 years ago.

Neither my eyes nor fingers work like they used to as far as tying goes. When I was younger, I could do 22s and the occasional 24, but now I was struggling to do 16s!!!! Also, only tied maybe a half dozen streamers this winter compared to over 100 total flies yearly in the past.

Now, he can tie for me!!!!

    PXL_20230421_123252746.jpg

Oh, this thread needed a revival, too!!!

Thank you sir!! Really thought of keeping the secretary desk, but like you said helps keep everything well organized.

12 days out from our season opening up and I have new gear and techniques I am itching to put to use to finally break that 40" mark this year on the fly.
