Hell yeah! If they live in murky/muddy water they can tend to taste like it. But fresh trout pulled from a bubbling creek are awesome!

Cool, good to know. In a few months I'll be doing my first ever fresh water fishing and I don't know too much about it. I've grown up fishing the ocean being on an island.

I'll be heading to Mexico to do some fishing there, then up to Cali and Oregon to hit the Rogue River. I've been watching some vids on youtube to get to know the basics.

    Appreciate the help!

Not much taste to them really. They tend to taste just like the water you pull them from with a hint of fish. Have some butter, oranges/lemons, herbs, and spices on hand.

Oh man..I'm so spoiled with all the selection of fish in the South Pacific so my expectations are high. I'd settle for some salmon any day though. I love the flavor of salmon fat.

A brown trout is basically a non oceangoing Atlantic salmon and a rainbow trout is a close cousin to all the pacific salmon species and is a near genetic copy of a steelhead

A large (enough that the bones aren't too tiny to pick around) healthy specimen of any of these species can be amazing when cooked right. This is assuming that the fish in question was reared in the wild eating real food not hatchery pellets and swimming in clean cold waters lol

If you like the salmon fat flavor you should try Arctic char or brook trout.

All this said, I almost without exception release every wild trout I am lucky enough to catch

The same shit everyone else has.
Brook trout are tasty. Stuff em with onions, garlic and lemons, wrap em in bacon, and grille.

I always keep a few stocked trout each season to eat. Ive never eaten a wild trout and dont think I could bring myself to do so.

Why can't you guys eat wild trout? Doesn't bother me any. If I want trout, the first few I catch are going to be dinner :hungry:. I almost always eat trout if I am catching them when camping. Basically leaves an extra dinner in the cooler in case I get hungry or stuck.

I guess I could eat em like fishsticks.

It would take 2 dozen of these little dudes to make a meal.

In all seriousness, I generally fish for native brookies in infertile headwater streams and catching one that is even of legal harvestable size isnt very common.

If we had more wild browns around here, Id be happy to eat them since they are "invasive".

Ever since I started fly fishing, in 1999, I have never kept a fish. Always release. I did get to eat a wild trout one year from the Madison. A guy rolled up to where my buds and I were fishing, threw in a treble hook and went deep. Came up with a 23" rainbow. He caught one more. Gave it to us, and left in his beat up Camaro. It tasted just like salmon.

I met some weird guys that won't keep fish in belief that they can come back and catch the same fish again and again. Or that by releasing fish, all the fish will grow to massive size making the waters trophy worthy. Others just feel bad about doing it.

I kill fish if they are invasive species, or native x non-native hybrids. Otherwise, c&r is the way to be.

I just feel that catching and releasing wild trout is the right think to do. Also, in many areas I fish, it is the Law.

It's situational for me, but I generally agree. F&G encourages anglers to keep and eat invasives in a lot of the waters that I fish in order to conserve native species and other wildlife that rely on them. It is all about maintaining the fishery as a resource, given the best available science.

There aren't enough wild browns around here for me to feel ok harvesting them. Native brookies can be a different story lol, especially when camping

I have without doubt caught the same fish more than once

Also if I put it back someone else may get the pleasure of catching it lol

I am not saying its impossible, but if your fishery isn't managed as catch and release it doesn't matter much. I get putting back a massive trout. Fingerlings go back because they are too small. Releasing pan fry sized trout...not worth it in properly managed waters. Most fish biologists are counting on harvest to maintain a healthy population.
