The RIO seems to be smoother to me, but I'm finding I have to clean them more often.

Caught a couple decent Bows in the creek today. Hung a 20+"...but 6x tippet combined with being in a tree a few casts prior meant that he broke me off :(

It's been a blazing hot summer here in Yellowstone country ,fires and all. Been guiding 6-7 days a week since mid July. Water has been a little to warm for the big fish for a while. Been having night's in the 30's lately though and conditions are improving. Maybe my clients will catch some fish that are photo worthy soon.

Yea, it's been hot here. The fish aren't very active. I'm ready for it to cool off so I can get back to catching the big guys.

The same shit everyone else has.
We finally had a few cool rainy days here in western PA this past week. It made the local streams fishable for the first time in weeks. I got a solid 1o hours of fishing in yesterday.

The brookies are getting their fall colors already.

Any my personal best native brookie so far. Ive caught a buncha 10-11" fish, but no bigger. I roke the 12" mark finally with this dude yesterday -

And the exact opposite. Smallest wild brownie to date -

Man am I lookin forward to fall and chilly nights and mornings.

And I used one of the furled leaders Ive been working on. They dont quite turn over as well as Id like, but they are working really. Very similar to the Cutthroat leader I have.

And lastly. On the topic of fly lines. I recently switched over to a fly line from a local company - http://shadowflyfishing.com/fly-fishing-lines.html - and its been nothing bit great.

Didnt know this thread existed...i have never caught a fish on a fly rod but ive practiced with my dads a little and i am very intrigued by fly fishing. Im looking to get a rod and reel probably next spring and i was thinking for a starter, considering i will be in smaller lakes and streams, the Orvis Clearwater outfit. 4wt and 8' 6" rod! i know there is better stuff and the reel isnt the best yada yada yada...but im just starting out and i think this is more than a good setup to start on. Thoughts?

I have a 9'5w Clearwater that I use for bigger trout waters and for smaller bass/panfish. Its a nice outfit for the price. Id recommend looking at a 5w just because its a little more universal especially if you plan on fishing warm water fish. Itll chuck bigger heavier flies with less effort, but can still delicately lay down down a tiny little dry. Adjust from there with more specialized rod/reels for specific applications.

Orvis stuff is nice. I think there is better entry rigs than the Clearwater stuff, but that's just me. I have an Orvis Recon I really like. Templefork makes some great stuff at great prices.

Well i was thinking about that but its mostly for trout and i thought a 4wt would be slightly more neutral than a 5wt and the length may be a little better for tighter spaces?

Will have to look into these. Thanks.

    Very cool. It is addicting.

The Clearwater rod is very nice. Went to Orvis one day to check rods and reels. It is a very good for a beginning fly fisher, being one myself. I almost got one the day I went, but wanted to see a couple more set ups before I purchased anything.

Also, check out the LLBean StreamLight. Another very nice set up. This was actually at the top of my list. Was recommended to me to check out by another member.

9' - 5 Wt is all you need for 90% of fresh water fishing.

If you live near a fly shop(s), I would encourage you to go them and try as many rod/reel/line combos as possible. The shop owners are generally very knowledgeable and will set you up with a nice outfit. I would't recommend a beginner "outfit" as you will most likely outgrow it quickly as you progress.

Both LL Bean (I'm partial to them as the flagship store is only 15 minutes away) and Orvis offer some fantastic packages as well.

How do you run your shuttles? I'd hate to have a stranger from the shuttle service rallying my brand new rig on the heise road/highway 26

    My photos are my proof!

If you want smaller and lighter for small trout waters, look into a 3w or 4w 7'6".

9o% of my trout fishing is done with a 7'6" 3w over lined with wf4w line. I typically fish water under 30' wide though.

The fish I posted yesterday came outta a stream about 15' wide at its widest spot.
