Anybody ever tossed any chickens at some Musky? I've recently started reading a lot about it and there is a pretty good musky river pretty close to my house.

we've got 6 now... well keep trying for another week or so then call it closed. If less than 10 people get in, are you tying 2 different patterns per person?

That sounds good, maybe for two or three of each pattern? So for 10 people in, each person would tie 18 or 27 of each pattern, 36 or 54 flies total if two patterns.

    TNDrew,
Thanks for helping with getting my idea going, sorry i have had a crazy week last week.

This exchange dosent need to happen all at once... Thats alot of fly to tie in a short time. I was thinking mayb opening a thread and posting pics of new flys were trying and if someone wants one they offer something in trade. Kindof like "heres this new fly ive tied, who wants to help me test it out, and ill help test yours."

    Just my thoughts...

That is a lot of flies, I was thinking 6 people - 2 patterns each... thats 6 of 1 fly, 6 of the other... 12 total.. If it were a midge swap or something i wouldnt see that many as a problem. I was kind of thinking of it as a "heres a cool fly or two that I use in my part of the country" kind of swap.

Nice ties, I have trouble tying that stuff...here's a go to streamer I use on the St Joe River, ID when the Cuts get sick of chomping dries. John Barr's Slumpbuster.

The White River below Bull Shoals dam is my fishing hole. Sowbugs, wooly boogers, and prince nymphs are my favorites. A weekend of world class trout fishing and a Razorback game...doesn't get much better...

Very nice!! Is that a pretty quick tie? Just from looking at it, is it some sort of a cone head zonker variation?

I had a hard time with it at first, the trick for me was thinning it way out before starting.

If Uncle Sam treats me right, I should be getting a personal pontoon and then I'm definitely coming back up there as soon as possible. Hows the Upper been fishing?

No idea. I haven't been up there. It's been too high to wade for the past month or longer and I haven't had time to float it. Most of the guides have been taking their clients up to Noontootla creek for their trips because you can't wade the Upper. I went down below Curtis switch (where you guys were gonna get out last time) and caught several 16", one 18", and saw a guy catch a 20ish" on the fly rod while I was down there a couple days ago.

Kind of a Zonker. Tied with squirrel strips, chartreuse wire, silver or gold flat braid. Here's the pattern as I tied it in our club's class this winter. It is John Barr's pattern, I tweaked it a bit.

    Materials List:
    Hooks: Streamer #2-10, 2X Long/2X Heavy (TMC 5262)
    Thread: 3/0 Olive
Cone: Silver Brassor Tungsten sized to hook
Lead Wire Substitute: Sized to hook
Rib: Brassie sizeUltra Wire, color of choice (chartreuse is used in class)
    Body: Silver miniflat braid
Wing: Olive DyedPine Squirrel Zonker Strip
Collar: Olive Dyed Pine Squirrel Zonker Strip wrapped like hackle

    1. De-barb your hook, slide on the cone, andplace in vise.

    2. Wrap the hook shank with 10 – 20 wrapsof lead substitute wire. Cut the wireand slide the wrap up into the back of the cone. This will keep the cone steady andsecure.

    3. Start the thread at the rear edge of the lead wraps andcover the lead and the shank back to the bend/above the barb area. Return the threadto the lead area and tie in a six-inch length of wire and wrap backward to thebarb area and then back to the lead area. This will be the rib.

    4. Tie in an eight-inch length of silvermini-braid and secure it back to the barb area with the thread. Return the thread to the rear of the cone.

    5. Begin wrapping the braid in slightlyoverlapping wraps to the rear of the cone. Secure it with three tight thread wraps and cut excess off. You should have a nice smooth slightly taperedbody.

    6. Tie in a two-three inch long piece of squirrel strip at the backof the cone by pushing the front end into the back of the cone and making a fewfirm wraps over it. It helps to cut a Vinto the end prior to securing it. Tieit in so the squirrel fur flows to the rear of the fly.

    7. Next you’ll secure the squirrel strip at thearea above the barb with the wire. Dampenyour fingers, lay the strip on top of the hook, and part the hair on the stripjust in front of the barb.

    8. Wrap the wire over thesquirrel strip through the part in the hair at the bend. Make two tight wraps. Ensure the squirrel strip is fairly tightagainst the body of the fly/braid prior to making the two wraps.

    9. This next step iscritical to making a good looking fly. Continuespiraling the wire forward through the hair strip by evenly separating the hairand ribbing the wire over the strip forward to the back of the cone. Tie offthe wire at the front of the body and clip the excess.

    10. Time to tie in the collar. Tie in another piece of squirrel, 2-3 inches, for the collar at the back of the cone with the skin side to the front and thefur pointing back toward the bend. Tohelp prevent too much bulk, cut another V into the squirrel strip.

    11. Wrap the squirrel strip around the hook at theback of the cone two or three times. Comb the hair toward the bend with eachwrap clearing the way for the next. Thisstep is similar to the way we tie in and wrap soft hackles.

    12. Tie the squirrel off at the back of the coneand clip the excess. The squirrel shouldbe against the rear of the cone. If, bychance you left a big gap between the rabbit strip and the cone, simply usesome spikey rabbit dubbing and fill in the gap.

    13. Make a few tight turns of thread to cincheverything down and whip finish behind the cone. Trim the squirrel striphanging from the bend to one half a shank length. Cut the hide only, leavingthe fur intact.

    14. Feel free to experiment with different colorsto mimic sculpins/baitfish/crawdads in your favorite waters.

Me and a bunch of guys out of Boulder Co are waiting to hear if we one a permit to float the Smith River in MT. If you get a chance to float it, take advantage of it. 5 days, 59 miles, no cell phone, some beer, awesome fishing!
