Yes the "English chalk stream dry fly purist" who secretly has san juan worms in his cigar tubes on the stream. Most of those guys are jerk offs. Nothing wrong with fishing nymphs. The best ever did it. Strike indicators are another story though. I cant get used to the things. They F me all me up when I'm nymphing.

I started & learned fly-fishing with dry flies only, then did the whole nymph thing for a while and caught a pile of fish (trout do feed 80%+ sub-surface). I'm at the point now where I'd rather catch fewer & bigger fish on a perfectly presented dry fly than just sit there and vacuum up fish in a run with a nymph rig - don't get me wrong, I'll still rig up nymphs, but dries are my passion.

Oh and chucking streamers is second - that's hard hat season.

    Tight lines!

This. I love all types of fishing but dries to rising trout is the best!

I have 2 packs I no longer use and I wouldnt mind unloading em. Prices are best offer + shipping. Id also be interested in possibly trading for something.

Allen Co Green River Chest Pack -

In good shape. Used for a few months. No missing zippers or straps. No wear or tear or damage, just a little dirty. Has been sitting for the past few years. These retail for about 70$ but are no longer made. Not a very large pack, but makes for a nice pack if you dont carry a lot of gear and like a chest pack.

Orvis Safe Passage Hip Pack (old style) -

In good shape. Used for about a year. No missing straps. Shows no wear or tear other than a little dirt. 1 zipper is missing the pull but works. Has been sitting for about a year now. Retails for 90$ but are no longer made either, This pack is decent sized and holds a good bit of gear. Does NOT come with the fly drying patch.

The hip pack is nice, but I carry too much shit when I fish. My slingpack is stuffed full of shit (gear, food, raincoat, ect) mainly because I'll spend 12+ hours fishing when I trout fish.

I used the hip pack for warm water/lake fishing where I didnt need a ton of gear and was only on the water for a few hours. Itll hold a water bottle, a few fly boxes and some other gear no problem.

I went from said chest pack to said hip pack to an Orvis sling pack to an Orvis guide sling pack. I have a Simms Headwaters full day pack that I bought for an insanely low price that I havent used yet. Im worried its too big for normal fishing, Im saving it for a summer fishing/camping/hiking weekend trip.

Yeah that's the only reason I haven't bought a hip pack yet. Not sure it will be quite big enough for my needs when hiking/fishing.

Yeah the hip pack is a little smaller than the wading bag I use now. I typically carry a water bottle, a couple fly boxes, my reel, pliers and forceps, a box with leaders and tippet and other random stuff so I believe it may be too small. This is what I need but it may be too bulky http://www.orvis.com/p/safe-passage-guide-sling-pack/14zh
I will say that the older blue color of your pack is a lot nicer than the new green.

Hey everyone new to this thread and glad I found it. I'm in the market for a new pack, relitively small for roughly one fly box and normal ordinary must haves. I currently have a sling and ready to downsize to either a chest or hip set up but more importantly it must be waterproof. This would be my grab and go bag for quick outings. Any thoughts?

This is what I use and love it. I have the camo one. It holds so much shit which is cool. The medium pocket holds 6 fly boxes and a flask. In the front pocket, I have a buncha small stuff - leaders, indicators, weight, thermometer, ect. Then in the main pocket I usually carry a roll of TP, a few granola bars, and raincoat. The main pocket also will hold a sammich, my Jet boil or thermos no problem.

Well guys, I made it. I'll be starting a new career as a fish biologist at the end of May. Working with chinook and steelhead (among others) in gorgeous Idaho. Super stoked and can't wait to start hooking into big fish again.

Congrats. Sounds like a killer gig.

If I could do it all over again, Id go back to school for something similar. Id love to be able to do something I enjoy daily.
