I am from Taylorsville, close to an hour and half away from Stone Mountain. I was fishing the DH on the Traphill side. I planned on hitting the wild trout waters but it started raining harder again. I threw a San Juan worm last week at a few but they weren't impressed.

I hardly ever fish stocked streams, but when I do, I throw an egg to get their attention with some sort of purple fly dropped below it. I'm not sure if you know this or not, but there is a DH stream closer to you below wilkesboro on elk creek.

I know there are a few streams closer in Wilkes, Stone Mountain is just the closest with a whole lot of fishing and I don't have to worry about being on someone's property. Is there anywhere you recommend outside of Stone Mountain? I've looked at a lot of the trout waters listed in the nc wildlife regulations digest but the streams end up being too skinny and shallow when I get there.

Don't overlook the ones that seem too shallow. I've caught some 15"+ wild browns in a couple inches of water. If you head up 321 above Lenoir, there are endless posbilities towards Boone. Unfortunately, I'm not gonna give out too much info on wild streams. Just get a good topographical map, and find decent sized water above ~3,000 ft and there will be trout most likely. Pisgah national forest isn't too far away either and it has some really good streams! The NCWRC has an online map that is a good starting place too.

I think I'm going to order a Danvise and get started tying in the coming weeks to get ready for spring. I know it's about as cheap as a rotary vice comes but I can't justify shelling out a couple hundred bucks on one yet.

Thanks for the info, maybe I'll try that next weekend. I need to plan a Cherokee trip soon and try to catch some of those 30 inch fish in the fly fishing only waters.

I like my Sage 3 wt on small streams up in the Sierras; accurate, easy casting and fun. I'd like to pick up a 7 or 8 wt for some Northern Cali Salmon action. Anybody have any recommedations?

For spring creeks, and small dries I have a Sage LL490' that I have fished for almost 20 years. For bigger rivers I have an Orvis 9' 6 wt with a very fast tip that can throw big nymphs, streamers and dries with ease, it also throws med sizes bass bugs very nicely. My go to rod for just about everything else is an old Sage 9' 4 wt with a medium fast action, it matches well with an Orvis large arbor Battenkill.

I recently cast a 9'6" Orvis Recon 6 wt that hopefully will someday will become part of my collection.

So many rods so little money.

The same shit everyone else has.
    Busy in here this weekend.

My favorite rod I own is a cheapy 7'6" Cabelas 3 Forks rod. Its my go to 90% of the time. Though I just bought a bamboo rod yesterday and I got the chance to fish it today. I think Im gonna really enjoy fishing it.

Also, it was 60* here in western PA. Took full advantage of it -

Any golden trout pics from up there?

Also if you don't want to spend a lot the cabelas three forks 8 wt is decent
I'd pair it with one of the less expensive lamson reels

Sounds like Cherokee, NC... The Reservation has a stretch of public fly-fishing only trophy water that has some absolute pigs stocked in it!

When I was on recruiting duty in Lancaster, Pa. back in the 80's Bob Clouser turned me onto the best terrestrial that has ever worked for me. I haven't used standard hoppers or beetles since.

Wapsi small foam beetle bodies and a light wire hook. Thin rubber legs and the length is important you want them shorter than most cut them. Looks a lot like this but legs should be just a tiny bit shorter.

But do not tie the rear down. Use super glue on the leg and body tie but there is likely other and maybe better options out there now but it still works for me and how Bob showed me.

The yellow dot on this one I assume is so that you can see it better. i just tie a bit of orange yarn in with legs so it is on top and I want better visibility in faster water. This one has peacock herl in the underbody and I have done that too, but without it works as well most of the time, doesn't hurt to have a mix of with and without to give the fish a different look. I usually tie in pheasant tail instead of peacock herl it creates smaller air bubbles. Besides I get my own tails and figure someone would get pissed if I shot their peacock LOL.

I tie the same pattern and it fishes well.

I also tie em in orange foam and the brookies love em.

We did find a few Goldens up in the Saddlebag Lakes area last Spring. I don't have pics but my son may have a couple on his phone, I'll check with him.
The Lamson reels are a good buy, on sale now: http://www.tridentflyfishing.com/fly-reels/waterworks-lamson-fly-reels.html
I'll check out the Cabella Three Forks, also thinking about a Sage VXP 7-8 wt, also on sale, if I can find one!

That is a nice rod. I ended up buying a 5 wt Clearwater because it was so much cheaper but I'd like to get a Recon or H2 in the future.
