The same shit everyone else has.
    'Twas my thought.

Nice pics. Reminds me a lot of the places I fish. Tons of streams tumble off Laurel Ridge here in western PA that look just like that

I rarely keep fish and the ones I do keep are stocked. It's fun to have a dog that can help!

From The Anglers Edge fishing store is this report about Pyramid Lake, in Nevada. Seems I recall someone talking about going up there for the lakes huge cutthroats.

PYRAMID LAKE UPDATE 1-26-17, 12:30 pm:
Just got off the phone with the tribal business office. After a meeting this morning, it looks like April will be the date to look for a reopening.
We know, it's frustrating. The roads from South nets to the north have the gulleys ( gullies?) in them, and water is still flowing through them, and getting more wash outs, making repairs difficult to continue and not have to be redone. 446 will remain closed until NDOT can get a handle on it, which could take a few months. PELICAN BOAT DOCK, the tribe is searching for funding to repair, estimated costs are $40,000.00
As to YEARLY PERMITS it has NOT been discussed during the meeting and no decisions have been made.
The tribe is trying to be realistic in these estimates. A press release, after approval will be sent out this evening

new to the fly fishing game. I got a tfo NXT 9' 5wt and a SA reel. Any places relatively close to the bay area that would be good for practicing my casts? I've read about the ponds in golden gate park but i dont really like to drive into the city.

I guess this isn't limited to fly-fishing, but since that's my primary method I'll post here. I fish a lot of remote ponds where I'm either carrying/dragging my canoe (sometimes short distances & sometimes fairly long) in or using one that's been stashed along the shoreline. I can fit all of my pond gear into a waterproof badlands backpack that I have. An anchor is an essential piece of gear, so to cut down on weight, I've setup this 3 piece portable system that works quite well. And it all packs right into the bag for easy transport.
    1. Heavy Mesh Bait Bag
    2. 50' Marine Grade Rope
    3. 4" Float (I'll explain that in a bit).
With this system I can simply find a couple of softball sized rocks (Maine is very rocky and most ponds have rocks) and put them in the bait bag and cinch it up. Voila! Instant Anchor. Big brook trout in these ponds are smart and will wrap around an anchor line in an effort to free themselves of the hook. This is where the float comes into play. I simply adjust the float (by sliding the rope) to the proper depth (usually a couple feet more than the pond depth) and then leave a little slack and then tie to a thwart/seat using a quick release knot. If I know I've got a brute on I can quickly release the anchor line and retrieve it later as the float with prevent the line from sinking. This system works well in all but the strongest of winds.

One key thing. I always clean it thoroughly to make sure there's no vegetation on the rope/bag to prevent any plants/invasives from spreading from one body of water to another. And I periodically soak it in a solution to kill any vegetation.

I am thinking about getting some new line in the morning before fishing. Anyone have any suggestions for good casting lines. I've only used Orvis Clearwater and Access 5wt lines. Is Scientific Anglers GPX really worth that kind of money? Thanks.

    Straight casting?
    Mending?
    Roll casting?
    Floating?
    Sinking?
    Sink tip?

I've always had good luck with SA products....But am transitioning over to Rio as lines need replacement.

Check out many of the discount online outdoor gear sites for sales.

Sierra Trading Post often has bargains.

WF is a good all around casting line.

Weight forward floating line. Just a good all around line. I have heard Rio Gold is pretty good line.

Rio Gold is a good choice for sure. It's colored so you see when the correct amount of line is out for proper loading of the rod.

I know it isn't the sharkwave gpx that people swear on, but that seems like a good deal. Probably be a little while before I can use it after tomorrow though

The guy who runs the fly shop at Cabela's here says the Cabela's Prestige lines are very good. He's also a certified casting instructor.

mats, flaps, and stickers. Extang solid fold 2.0. Mobtown sliders and full skids. AVS vents
I generally buy whatever is on sale. They will all cast fairly well these days, and I hardly notice any real benefit from more expensive lines. I always go with WF floating for the type of fishing I do. I rarely cast more than 25-30 feet, and will just move if I have to.

The higher end lines are definitely worth it. I like the S.A. and Rio lines.
