Food plots

Looks like this needs more soil prep than I am capable of though

 

Got any buddies with a small tractor?

 

We’ve been using a seed mixture called Pure Attraction made by Whitetail Institute. We plant in early August and the deer pound it all season long.

 

One of mine is looking pretty good with some Naked Oats and Brassica Mix.

 

I might . I was researching ATV implements today . I would have to either make a clearing in the woods or till up a logging road . There are other people that hunt this property also . I have to think this one out .

 

Just spread the rest of the Evolved Harvest Throw N Grow seed down on top of what was already there . Been about10-11 days nothing sprouted yet . Also put down another 25 # of 10-10-10 ! I’m thinking the snow should give it a kick start .

 

I was watching a hunting show the other night and they were talking about food plots and planting a few different areas of the plot in different things that come in at different times to keep the deer interested, I’m trying to figure out what I can plant to last until January, maybe clover?

 

I think no matter what gets planted here the deer wipe it out before it gets a few inches tall . This is only the second time I’ve planted a food plot . So I’m still experimenting. They say long and narrow plots as opposed to square is better . Doe will bed right near the plot and doe groups will stack up behind each other causing the bucks to be bedded further back yet

 

My Oats/Brassica mix planted last Sept got hammered all winter but still going strong.

The day after Turkey season I'm planting this.

 

One thing you can do is put out Milorganite in a few small buckets around your food plot. This will keep the deer off and allow the plants to get established. Then you can remove the buckets when you're ready for the deer to return and browse. Works well most of the time.

 

Winter wheat and rye grass.

 

Assuming that your state laws allow it. That’s not allowed in Illinois, no salt, mineral, or bait anytime of the year. There are also some fairly inexpensive fencing options.

 

Milorganite is a biosolid fertilizer made from human waste. Definitely check your state laws but it considered as bait is pretty odd since its commonly used to repel wildlife.

We rode over to where I plowed the food plot the other day and where I had been putting salt and grape koolaid powder the ground was tore up, even after plowing it about 10” deep. I need to put a camera on it.

 

We have sprouted

 

I just ordered 2 different bags of seed for our food plot. I figured I'll plant it half and half and see what happens. It's been raining a lot this week but hopefully I can get it in soon.
