If you smoke meat more than once a month, you'll be saving even with the yearly fee. That's just my experience. Plus the quality is great.

From the price of brisket I saw from Costco 12lb $49 plus the 30 min drive each way, it's cheaper to get the 10lb for $52 from the butcher around the corner.

Everybody should buy their rotissiere chickens! They're organic and my Father-in-law grows for them.

Last summer I lost my Maverick remote transmitter. I don't know how, but an exhausting search and nearly a year later, it has not turned up. I've been doing ok without one but it was time for replacement.

The thing I did not like about the Maverick (and others like it) was there are a lot of functions but just a few buttons. You have to go through a lot of stuff just to get to the one thing you want to do. This was very irritating when the alarm went off at 2am and I couldn't undo it easily (I never set the alarm as it was a pain, so it was at default).

My criteria was low cost (fracking lost transmitter) and it had to have an iPhone/ipad interface to run it. So I settled on this one for about $30. It can have up to 6 probes and is fully and easily programmable from my iPad. Just got it in and set it up in 2 minutes (paired, test set temp range and alarms on both probes) without having to look at the instructions. We'll see how it works in the long run.

I also decided it was time to get a decent knife to cut ribs, brisket, etc...

Figuring this grill out, slowly but surely. Burgers and onions were amazing! Just need to figure out how to do a long slow cook next!

Char-Griller Akorn? I am literally looking at one online and TW at the same time? How long have you had it? I was thinking about one of these because of the low price point and to see if I would really use it.

Doing a one last hoorah at our house this coming weekend before we head back to FL. Going to do a couple butts and a couple briskets along with some smoked beans. Think I'm going to do the pork the day before then get up early and put the brisket on the day of.

I went inexpensive but highly rated. There were certainly better, more expensive, but this seemed like a good value. I've used it tonight for dinner (inappropriately to cut vegetables!) and it worked great.

Yep, had it for about three weeks, bought it from a guy I work with for $75! I absolutely love it, nothing like the taste of charcoal grilled food!
