Yep, I'll post up the recipe tonight. Super easy though, just throw a few things in the crockpot and forget about it. Smells amazing and is so good. Looking forward to leftovers tonight, its one of those things that's better the second day.

I THINK (not 100% sure, will edit later if I'm wrong...) the recipe is
    1 cup beef broth
    2 tbsp soy sauce
5 pieces ginger or 1-1/2 tbsp paste
    3 tbsp brown sugar
    2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
    3 star anise
1 to 2 lbs short ribs
brown the ribs for a minute on each side in a skillet with some oil and throw in the crock with everything else. turns out best if you can let it cook min. 8 hours. fish out the star anise before serving. tried it on a higher/faster cooking and its just not as good. needs a long time for hte marrow in the bones to work their magic on the sauce
serve with noodles or rice and steamed veggies of your choice.
i skim a little of the grease/fat off the top before serving and add about 1 tsp of cornstarch to thicken up the sauce a little. you could probably use just about any cut of beef but there's something about the fat and marrow that you get with the short ribs. i usually do a few ribs and then some sliced sirloin as the ribs aren't super meaty

I would try this in a second except for the star anise part, I can't stand those. I wonder how it would be with them omitted?

I'll tag you if I have to edit anything once I get home and find hte recipe card

probably pretty bland. the ginger and anise give the sauce most of its flavor. wonder if you could sub in something else that would have a similar taste...

anise tastes like black licorice, but mild.
word of warning: the star anise can break up if you stir the mixture after cooking for a few hours. they are rock hard and if you were to bite into one on accident you could break a tooth. I take a picture of them before dropping them in the crockpot and then compare that to what I can fish out at the end of the day. And I keep fishing until all parts have been recovered.

This is why I have a hollow metal egg ball on a chain for whole spices. Works great for whole peppercorns in my tomato sausage soup without having to fish them all out afterwards!

I don't either but for this is works awesome.
The anise are hard to find at the store too. you won't find them with the mccormick et el jarred spices. I have to get mine at a specialty store that sells spices in bulk and you can scoop or pick whatever you want.

Is the licorice flavor pronounced? Like, strong?
