You know that a 5-speed transmission has FIVE speeds and not just THREE, right?
At 3000 rpm, that thing will be moving just about 82 mph in 5th gear.
    http://www.engineersedge.com/mechanics_machines/transmission-gear-ratio-calculator.htm
    Use these values;
    Width: 245
    Profile: 75
    Wheel: 16
    Axle Ratio: 4.10
    1st gear: 3.95
    2nd gear: 2.06
    3rd gear: 1.44
    4th gear: 1.00
    5th gear: 0.81
    6th gear: does not apply.

Ok, I give up, I don't understand the fact that when the AC compressor is running it is harder to move that BIG RUBBER BELT, thus causing the engine to work harder, thus using more fuel. I also don't understand that when I am sitting idle and I turn on the AC the engine idles harder.

    You win

I do agree they didn't control enough of the variables. How ever you don't need to be a scientist to use the scientific method to learn or prove stuff.

I think it goes without saying that you don't have to have a formal education in a particular field to be able to apply elements of that field, but it does help you to know how to apply it correctly. They were generally pretty bad at applying controls. As far as scientific accuracy, I'd rate their "confirmed" results as being predominantly acceptable (its easy to prove that something is possible -- just do it), but their "busted" results, or those based on accuracy of measurement were highly suspect, often tainted by poor experimental design and controls.

It takes 3.5 to 7 HP to drive the AC compressor, depending on the compressor's displacement and operating pressure. That power is generated by the engine's burning air and gasoline. The power is transmitted to the AC compressor by the previously referred to "BRB".

When the AC compressor clutch engages it places that 3.5 to 7 HP load onto the engine (actually the pump's start-up load at first) and engine speed drops a bit until the ECU switches in the added air/fuel to accommodate the additional load. On modern cars the ECU also controls the AC on/off so it knows when the AC system needs some boost and can enable the AC rpm boost simultaneously, and even anticipate it a bit. Larger engines have higher rotating mass to better handle the initial load, smaller engines have less rotational inertia and AC startup can be quite noticeable...

Here's a solution that isolates the energy consumption of the AC from that of the truck:

I feel like a noob asking this but my truck comes stock with 265/70/16 tires. I'm now using 265/70/17 tires and my speedometer is off according to the TW tire size calculator. If my speedo shows 65mph then my actual speed is 67ish. How does this affect my fuel efficiency and how do I calibrate it correctly? Thanks!

If you have larger tires that means for every rotation of the tire you are going a bit further. So if the tires are bigger and the difference the tire size calculator is 3% you are getting 3% better gas mileage than calculating with your odometer will give you.

    So just add 3%!

When people DON'T worry about what things cost, you know what happens? They END UP being unable to afford ANYTHING.

Probably not a full 3%. Will lose some mpg due to heavier tires, maybe a little more lost if wider tires.

    Many & varied
I just logged 429 and 425 miles to a tank on mostly highway driving. I drove 5mph under the speed limit with cruise control on. I think I could've done better if my tires were aired up a bit. I am lifted with oversized tires, a few bolt-one (80-100lbs?), and had half a bed full of camping gear. I drafted semi's from 50' back running 62-65mph. It can be done, m'bros!
