Can you give me a brief summary of what you're referring to? Speak to me like I've done zero research on audio upgrades for my truck please so I don't make your same mistakes

I joined TW in Sept of last year Bought a used 2022 SR5. I immediately started mods (my first taco) and reached out frequently for suggestions or help. Bumper, winch, front and rear lift, shocks, tire/wheels. wheel spacers, tonneau cover, hood scoop, fender flares, lighting and wiring. I never experienced lack of support, but there were a couple of small mods that I only received one or two responses.
Might have just been the topic you were asking about.
After I got the hang of TW, I would search all forums for previous discussions on the specific mod. Typically, I will not read threads over 4 years old, as the information may not be current. After reading, if my question was not resolved, I will create a NEW thread'
Good luck in your future endeavors.

    1. Search/understand the OEM parts you have.

1a. A great start is to understand your specific trucks trim level-- it's really only two options JBL, or the 'entune'/standard version. This defines the components you have.

    2. Look up the location of all the parts.
2a. JBL has the dash-mounted radio, an amp behind the rear seats, a subwoofer, and individual wiring ran to each individual speaker in 6 locations.

The amp is the 'brains'. It does absolutely everything-- this is what makes the JBL systems more complex to work on. You just can't get that far without fussing with the amp. In many cases, it's far easier and cheaper to 'labotomize' the stereo system, and replace the amp. But like in The Munsters, labotomy has its own expenses and unintended consequences.

2b. The 'entune' or more standard stereo, is far easier to work on. The radio has 4 speaker outputs. Each respective side of the dash and same-side front door speaker shares an output (more complex, but put simply), the rear speakers also each get an output.

    3. Create a game plan/goal, and create a rough cost estimate. "What are you looking to make better?"

    4. Search out others audio builds to understand the parts they used, and how they might fit your previously specified goals and price range--there's only so many brands and types of gear out there. So you'll start seeing a pattern very soon in brand/ model equipment.

In The OP's case, he appears to have skipped steps 1, 2, 3, & 4, and instead just started buying and throwing gear at the truck that certain audio websites said would physically fit into the truck, irrespective of the version of audio system he had.

Almost, I said almost, all Toyota upgraded or premium sounds systems have sucked to deal with, since forever. From older Lexus trucks with Mark Levinson or Nakamichi. To newer Toyotas with JBL. They make it hard as heck to modify the system or package in any way. Some models are damn near impossible and require a complete re-wire of your sound system. Buying the basic sound system is usually the best way to go, if you plan to change things.

I sound deadened the doors on my 22' premium taco with jbl... sounds much better and NO MORE RATTLE, surprisingly. I listen to heavy bass music half the time edm.... really wanted the oem+ and did some research on the gx jbl speakers, but sufficed with the new sound with the sound deadening. Well worth it. Anyone tried the gx speakers from jbl?

I only did the inner doors and back cab wall with second skin damplifier pro. Spendy, but it made a huge difference.

(Factory non JBL 2017 radio with nav, kicker key 200.4, kicker key 500.1, JL Stealthbox, Focal RSE-165,Focal RCX-165)

It would be nice to do the floors and roof at some point (more for heat insulation than noise), but I'm not motivated to gut the truck anytime soon.

Aww you took all the fun out of it :boink: I thought OP had the secret sauce!

Thank you though, sincerely. For those actually interested in audio upgrades, the thread will now serve as helpful!

My 2006 Tundra came with a non JBL amplifier. The truck wasn't labeled as such, but it was similar to a Tacoma TRD Sport. The sound system came with an OEM six CD changer and the head unit was wired to the amplifier that had no label that I could find.

I bought a nice head unit from Crutchfield, along with the harness and installation kit. Keep in mind that I've dealt with Crutchfield from the paper catalog and 1-800 number days and I've always found them helpful. I installed everything and no audio. Rechecked my work and found no problems. I called Crutchfield and spent over an hour with tech support helping me troubleshoot. They had never run into this configuration and it seemed that there was a wire that ran from the head unit back to the amplifier to turn the amplifier on.

To keep the story to reasonable length, I had to build a speaker harness which ran to where the amplifier was located and then trace the wires back to the individual speakers. I just bypassed the mystery amplifier and everything worked. I even drew up a wiring diagram for future reference.

Sometimes Toyota and other manufacturers throw a curve ball and you have to just swing and hope for the best. Similar thing happened with my daughter's CIVIC hybrid when I installed a stereo with back up camera.

Since I started doing installs in the mid 1970s, I could tell stories about how much hacking had to be done back then, but won't.
