Hey thanks! He's doing great. He even started giving himself his own injections about 2 weeks ago (after I check the dose of course). The doctor says that he is in the "honeymoon period" right now so his blood sugar levels are relatively stable. I hope that he is a candidate for the insulin pump after this phase is over. I still don't know much about the pump but it sounds like "fewer shots" and that would be a good thing. He sure is handling it well though, better than I would be at his age :) . Thanks for remembering him!

So sorry to hear that. Type 1? Hopefully you caught it quickly and he's home and not in the hospital. It changes some things, esp. what and when he eats but kids are resilient and can cope better than adults a lot of times I think. I pray that your son manages it well and that you and your family adjust quickly and easily. Let me know how he's doing when you get time. I don't know as much as some people but you have to learn a lot, quickly with this deal. I'll definitely keep your son in my prayers.

Yep, type 1. Kids are amazingly adaptive to stuff like this. It is always great to see them being able to handle new situations. I agree he is hanldling it better than I would, and it seems your son is the same. For us the biggest obsticle has been recreating what we eat. Now that we are aware of carbs I have shuddered a little looking at the nutritional info on food. Thank you for the kind thoughts. Hopefully you and your family can get back to some bit of normalcy soon.

The biggest thing I have found it just to keep positive about it. We talked with Ty and we all agreed that this is something serious and something not to be taken lightly, however it is not the end of the world. We have taken it as an opportunity to eat healthier, and in some wierd way you feel closer to your child going through this with them. It is not something I would wish on anyone but it sounds as if your son will have the kind of support he needs to come through it just fine.

As a type 1 diabetic since 8th grade, I know what it is like. When I was admitted my BS was 854.

Anyway, watch out for Halloween and birthday parties, especially the first one. Its easy to lose control of yourself quickly. Diabetes is definitely a lifestyle change, but it is one of the easier illnesses to have. I may only be 18, but feel free to pm me if you want any advice from a kids perspective, rather than the parent perspective.

    hope he stays well

Chuck, good to hear Porter is still adjusting well. Continued prayers for him and all of ya.

Dan, I think you mentioned your son's name is Ty, I'll put him, as well as you and your family on my prayer list. I don't think Chuck would mind me volunteering him, but call him if you need to talk to someone kinda removed from your situation. He's easy to talk to and after 5 minutes you will think you've known him for years. Just a thought.

Your concern for Porter is very strong, and that shows how much you must be there for him. It's good to know he's got a Dad like you that cares so much about him. You say he's taking to it well, but without you being there for him his journey would be that much harder. Pat your wife and yourself on the back, you've done well. We're all here to support each other in times like this. Stay strong, you're family is in our thoughts.

Thanks Ben. And I absolutely do not mind you volunteering me for that. It's good to have other people to lean on sometimes as we all know.

Thanks! That means a lot. After that initial shock, I think we've all adjusted pretty darn fast. It's just another part of everyday life now.

OMG! I just saw this thread. My wife and I will be praying for you and your family. We both volunteer for the annual JDRF (juvenile diabetes research foundation) Gala event every year and we meet alot of the kids that have JD and their families. Honestly, I never really knew what they had to go through on a daily basis, i guess just out of ignorance. But those kids and their families are some of the nicest, most up-beat people i've ever met. They show a video after all the auctioning is over and it almost brings me to tears. One of the girls that we did the silent auction with was telling us how (she was a high school senior) she was going on a date with this guy and I guess she was really nervous and at dinner with the guy she blacked out and almost went into a coma (i guess because her insulin levels were all messed).
I hope i didn't bum everyone out, but I now realize what these families have to go through on a daily basis and how lucky people are that never have to face these kinds of problems.
You, your son and your family will be in our prayers Chuck.
