That's not true, although it is one option. I just talked to unichip last week, Aaron I think. They are now offering a lot of great options that other tuners are not. I am summarizing below, but these are the basics from my notes.

    1) They will sell you a $75 cable so you can load your own programs, then they will create and tweak a program at no charge. This requires the end user to know exactly what needs to be done by using some kind of data collection.

    2) They will rent a full programming package (cables, laptop, wideband, wireless card) for $180/week. Once you get the package, you hook everything up and call them. They will remotely monitor all sensors and tune on the fly while you drive around town, or sit on a dyno. There is no charge for the programming and they will create as many different programs as you want during the time you have the equipment rented. So, you can add/remove mods and create different maps.

    3) They sell the full software program (same that is loaded on the laptop you rent in 2) above) for $290 and it comes with the cables. From there you can do all of your own programming, or they will help programming via remote if you have the rest of the sensors that are not included with the software package.

The above info can be roughly verified on their NEW website.

    www.unichiptuner.com

I've tuned standalones before and the above option 2 is a really nice option. I cannot comment on the quality.

Actually you can just drive without it while its being programmed... unplugs in like 10 minutes and car/truck runs just fine without it as long as you plug all the old stuff back in.

Install is easy. I used to have one on my Matrix with a bunch of mods done to it and it really felt MUCH better than no tune. Great for people with intake, exhaust, etc. or no mods at all!

    Good luck with the sale!

3 out of the current 8 replies are your negative replies in some other guys for sale post? Sounds like you are trying to say something? Maybe your info came from a local tuner that wanted the keep the business local? Of course, I also have not done this, so maybe what I was told is all false and the tuner has some inside information that unichip is hiding?

BTW: option 2) as I posted it, is hidden on their site under the text "rental kit".
Option 3 (and option 1) is on their website under "accessories" link, but I think the cable needed is the one listed at $85 if I understood the guy right for what is needed?
edited because my above link had a typo in it. Should be unichiptuner.com

As for unplugging in a forced induction you are right, though it would actually work at low boost because the fuel mixture is based on the MAF sensor. Been there, done that. If it were a MAP instead, it wouldn't work under any boost because they have to be special to account for positive pressure.

so who has used the unichip? I spoke to a shop the other day and the guy there said he had a bad experience with it, so wouldn't recommend it (he didn't give me the details). I've got a K & N cold air intake and looking at possibly adding a muffler to get some performance out of it.
