So I have a road trip coming up and am considering a radar detector. Seems technology and pricing is much different since I owned one last. Anyone use one regularly and/or have recommendations?

I've had the Whistler z-11r+ for four years and it's served me very well. Unfortunately it picks up the radar signals from the new adaptive cruise control on vehicles, as well as the blind spot monitoring systems. (X/K band) So I do have a fun time with false alerts more frequently. Also in Maine the dot/construction signs also put out radar and set it off every time.

The nice part is that the band signal those are on, light up an orange light on the display and a different tone than the police band. The police band lights up a red light with its own tone. (KA band) I can't speak for its laser ability as police up here don't use it much.

My roommate uses one of the passport brand radar detectors and it has a Bluetooth feature that allows it to communicate with a server along with all the other ones on the road. So common false positives like the construction signs get filtered out. It's more pricey at two to three hundred dollars, but considering that's less than the price of a ticket and even less than the price of insurance premiums, we both agree it's worth it.

edit: it's a good idea to check the laws in each state you're going to be driving through if they allow them or not. Modern police radar guns detect your radar detector, so they will pull you over if you're in a state they don't allow them in.

Also worth noting, these work best on highways/open roads. On twisty backroads with hills and whatnot, sometimes they won't pick up the police radar until they're coming over the hill directly at you. At that point it's too late usually. And there's always the "instant on" radar which means you get no warning until they flick the switch. If it's aimed at you already, may as well pull over before they put their lights on...

I don't own one, but as a professional road warrior, I've been doing my homework for some time anticipating pulling the trigger.

This seems to top most 'recommended' lists.

    fwiw.

As an aside, if you have a mirror that has power to it like my 2013, one of these doo dad's can tap it and provide ample energy without having to run something around the windshield. My plan was to hang it from a Ram Ball on the BirdDawg mirror riser already installed.

@BananaMans points and the purchase price have kept in my 'cart' and out of my truck, thus far.

    in other news....PSA

@Plain Jane Taco probably already called this out, but the pages pile up so fast around here it would take me hours to go back and read it all!

so at the risk of repeating a message...you can get 6 qts of Mobil 1 for $28 at costco right now, and the Kirkland brand is an even crazier good deal. flavors I noted were 5-30 and 0-20.

And howdy Ya'll. All work and 2 wheeled play for ol' 'smoke lately.

I don’t pay a cent for oil and filter and fluids.
Bill sends me all his used stuff and I just throw it in mine.

I've been in a couple police escorts on charity motorcycle rides... it's a lot of fun getting to legally run red lights in a group of bikes! :D
