I don’t want to get more aggressive.
    It’s circular.
A razor blade flexes and follows contours better.
I need to sneak up on the thickness. Then when I start to sand the contours are in a much better position. If I get a flat spot I’m screwed and have to repair that area.

All done by hand, not machine. Fudge factor necessary…

I love the term “sneak up on it “, same term I used when cutting pieces that have to fit perfectly, you just can’t measure it.

Yup. I rarely measure any trim work when final fitting. I'll cut everything long, then mark when it's in place.

    Edit....unless I'm pre-assembling window/door trim extensions/casing.

I'm confused, does the drill bit rotate in that jig or is it held firmly in place?

Put downward pressure on the scraper and go back and forth. Drill bit steel is harder than the scraper, and will roll the edge of the scraper, very sharp, easy to touch up. Belt sander gets you started.

Drill bit stays stationary, it’s just used as a hard surface to roll the edge of the scraper

So you are trying to cut the drill bit at an angle to make your scraper sharp ???

The hard steel of the drill acts as a grinding wheel/surface

One final question. Did you have to make a groove in the drill to get the right angle started?
I’m having a vision of you trying to saw through a drill bit with a dull piece of metal..

The groove in the bit is from repeated passes, but yeah it’s like trying to cut the drill bit in half with a dull piece of steel. Sounds dumb, but works well

Well, This cover has been the hardest I’ve worked on..
It would not sand down easily..
I was worried I was going to have to get some air tools.
But I think it came out pretty good.
The guy that gave me the ball said just use black for coloring.
I put some water based black in the grooves and you could tell from 5 feet away it was damaged.
So had to use my color wheel to figure out purple and had to start with violet as a base instead.
Was never going to be a perfect match but at least it doesn’t stand out.
    Honest Opinion Please…

    AFTER

The guy will be able to bowl with it tomorrow instead of waiting 6 weeks and costing more.
This one shines like my red balls. Yea it’s not perfect but, I don’t have the chemical formula….
